ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Radford outscored UNC Asheville 42-22 in the second half for its fourth win when trailing at halftime as the Highlanders move into a three-way tie for second place with a 64-48 victory Tuesday night inside the Kimmel Arena.

The Highlander defense has held seven of its last eight opponents under 60 points, including four under 50 points. Radford has also limited opponents to below 40 percent shooting in seven of the games during the stretch.

Trailing 26-22 at halftime, Radford came out of the locker room with a 11-2 start to the third quarter with the help of six points from Jayda Worthy, who finished with a game-high 14 points for her 14th double-digit game on the season.

After six straight points by Worthy, Radford commanded a 33-28 lead with 5:10 remaining in the quarter, forcing UNC Asheville to call a timeout. The Highlander lead came for the first time since the 8:50 mark in the second quarter. The timeout slowed the Radford run as the Bulldogs answered with 10-4 swing of their own, regaining the lead 38-37 with under two minutes remaining in the quarter.

Khiana Johnson knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner pocket and Lydia Rivers drained two free throws at the end of the quarter as the Highlanders never looked back, taking a 42-40 lead into the final frame. Radford totaled 20 points in the quarter on 8 of 13 shooting, including big 3-pointers from Claudia Quevedo and Johnson.

Radford and UNC Asheville traded baskets early in the fourth quarter before the Highlanders finished the game on a 18-4 run, sparked by a Jen Falconer 3-pointer off a Rivers' steal. Radford's defense held the Bulldogs to only four points in the final seven minutes of the game as they went 2 for 8 from the field with five turnovers.

The Highlanders made 7 of 13 attempts in the fourth quarter going 7 of 8 from the charity stripe, led by a 5 of 6 effort from Quevedo at the line. Radford's defense forced six Bulldog miscues in the quarter, turning them into 11 points, while scoring 12 of the 22 final points in the paint.

Radford's 64-48 comeback was led by a 57.7 second half field goal percentage, making 15 of 26 attempts.

QUOTABLE
  • "I thought UNC Asheville's defense pressure was excellent in the first half, they contested every shot, which led to some rushed decisions by us. We discussed at halftime that we needed to slow down and have more poise. We did a better job at moving their defense in the second half, which resulted in better looks. This second half was one of the better ones we have played this season, the kids did a great job with the adjustments we made at halftime." ~ Radford head coach Mike McGuire
