CREASY ERA BEGINS WITH SHUTOUT WIN OVER ETSU

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Hope Creasy era began in style for Radford softball as timely hitting, successful defense and stellar pitching was the recipe for success in a 6-0 victory over 2017 NCAA Tournament participant ETSU on Friday morning.

The second game of the day against Austin Peay was originally scheduled for 2 p.m., however, the game was canceled due to inclement weather.

Abby Morrow continued her trend of complete games dating back to last season and only allowed two hits going the distance with a complete game shutout. Morrow corralled six strikeouts and only faced 24 batters.

The Highlanders broke the scoreless game in the third inning as Marissa Gagliano plated Talia Douglas, who reached on a single down the left field line, with a single up the middle. Lauren Maddrey made it 2-0, scoring on a Hunter Mundy fly out to center.

After two scoreless innings, Marrisa Yow blasted a 3-2 pitch to left field that found it's way over the wall in the sixth. Yow, who hasn't played a game since May 14, 2016, drove in three runs giving the Highlanders a 5-0 lead.

Marissa Gagliano joined the home run party following Yow with a home run to left field in the seventh inning. The solo shot gave Gagliano her 21st multi-hit game of her career and Radford a six run lead.

Nikki Grupp and Tiffany Laughren were the only Buccaneers to get hits, but neither of them were extra base hits.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  Marissa Gagliano and Sofia Tapia led the way with multi-hit games. Both went 2-for-4 and scored one run.
•  Gagliano tallied two RBIs, but Marissa Yow led the way with three thanks to the three-run home run.
•  Talia Douglas picked up her first collegiate hit and finished the game 1-for-3 with one run scored.
•  Abby Morrow pitched her 48th career complete game and her 12th career shutout, moving her solely into third place at Radford.
•  Morrow did not allow a walk and struck out six. The senior has not allowed a walk in three consecutive games and 12 innings pitched.

QUOTABLE
"After a lot of hard work and waiting for opening day, the team came out focused and strong. It was a little bit of a slow start, but we had several individuals step up with big time hits. With runs on the board, the battery did an amazing job finishing the game in 76 pitches. Today was a total team win."  ~ Hope Creasy
