CALDWELL NAMED BIG SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Radford men's tennis junior Alexandros Caldwell was named Big South Player of the Week for the first time in his career as announced by the conference on Wednesday morning.
 
Caldwell put together a strong week for Radford during its Spring Break trip to Florida as the Highlanders went 3-1 on the week, improving to 6-3 on the season.  
 
"Alex has been a warrior for us. He has stepped up to the occasion and has started talking to the team before matches to push to them," said head coach Rolando Vargas. "His energy and work ethic have helped him become a natural leader for us. He is a big-time player who can raise his level in the toughest moments. Regardless, he wants to keep improving. That's what makes him special."
 
In singles play, Caldwell finished with a 4-0 record on the week, playing in the No. 1 spot for the first time on the season. The four wins improve Caldwell to 8-1 overall, winning seven straight singles matches.
 
He opened the week with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 win over Bethune-Cookman's Victor Bravo, while following that up with another comeback win for a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-0 victory over Toledo's Vince Anzalone.
 
Caldwell wrapped last week with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Xavier's Jack Dykema and Webber International's Hugo Hasegawa 6-4, 6-2.
 
Caldwell went 4-0 in singles last week and 3-1 in doubles. He played the No. 1 position for the first time on the season, improving to 8-1 overall and winning seven straight.
 
He also teamed up with Rodrigo Magalhaes in No. 2 doubles to go 3-1. The duo defeated Toledo (6-1) Xavier (7-6 [8-6]) and Webber International (6-0). With the three wins in doubles play, Caldwell improves to 6-2 on the season.
