RADFORD FALLS LATE TO UNC ASHEVILLE IN CONFERENCE OPENER



RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team allowed a late inning run to UNC Asheville in the conference opener that resulted in a 5-4 loss on Friday night inside Williams Field at Carter Memorial Stadium.

UNC Asheville (4-13, 1-0) scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as Andrew Friedholm hit a deep fly ball to left field that scored Cody Wilson. He reached on a one-out single, moved to second on a walk and third on a wild pitch.
 
Radford (7-10) had the tying run in scoring position with two outs in the ninth, but a pop out to the shortstop ended the game.
 
The Highlanders scored the first run of the game in the second inning as Straton Podaras plated Matt Roth on a sacrafice fly. However, the Bulldogs answered in the top of the third inning. They tied the game on an RBI single from Friedholm.
 
UNC Asheville took a 2-1 lead as a run scored from second on a throwing error by Ryan Sande. With runners on first and third and no outs, Carmine Pagano hit a deep fly ball that plated Kole Haris and gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. Another run scored via a sacrifice fly to left field and gave UNC Asheville a 4-1 lead, before .
 
With one out and runners in scoring position, Matt Roth singled to left field and plated Colby Higgerson to cut the deficit in half. Horwitz moved to third on the play and scored on the throw after Roth stole second. Roth later scored, and tied the game at four when Clayton Baine hit an RBI double down the left field line with two outs.
 
Neither team could score over four innings, until UNC Asheville scored the go-ahead run in the eighth.

  • Loss: Ryan Sande (0-1) | (3.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K)
  • Six of the seven Radford hits came from three players as Matt Roth, Spencer Horwitz and Clayton Baine had two hits each.
  • The other Highlander that picked up a hit was pinch-hitter, Will Harless.
  • One of Baine and Horwitz's hits were doubles – the only multi-hits of the game.
  • The Highlanders stole four bases in the conference opener. Horwitz, Roth, Carlin Christian and Adam Whitacre each swiped a bag
  • Roth scored two of the four runs with Colby Higgerson and Horwitz scoring the others.
  • Roth, Baine and Straton Podaras drove in a run each.
  • Austin Gerber provided a quality outing in relief. He struck out two, only walked one and held UNC Asheville scoreless for four innings.
  • Three of the Highlanders five runs allowed were earned.
