RADFORD SOFTBALL DROPS TWINBILL TO LONGWOOD

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford softball team opened Big South Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader against reigning tournament champions, Longwood, but fell 4-1 in the opener and 3-2 in the second game.

Radford (14-11, 0-2 Big South) combined for 10 hits over the two games. Five different players had the 10 hits for the Highlanders. Hannah Medlam led the way with three of them and picked up her fourth multi-hit game of the season in the series opener.

GAME ONE INFORMATION
  • Score: Longwood 4, Radford 1
  • Records: Lancers (13-8, 1-0 Big South) | Highlanders (14-10, 0-1 Big South)
  • Location: Lancer Field | Farmville, Va.

Radford outhit the Lancers, but couldn't find the timely hits in order to capitalize thus resulting in a 4-1 Big South opener loss.

Longwood notched the first run of the game as Destiny Martinez singled home Glenn Walters, who reached on leadoff walk. She advanced to second on the throw, but wouldn't get as far as that due to an inning-ending groundout to Marissa Gagliano at shortstop.

The Lancers added to their lead after Kasey Carr hit a two-run shot to left center field that gave them a 3-0 lead. Huffman, who entered the game at the beginning of the inning, was able to get the final two outs and stop the bleeding.

After getting one runner into scoring position in the third, the Highlanders finally got a runner home in the fifth inning that cut the deficit to two runs, 3-1. With two outs in the inning, Gagliano blasted a ball over the center fielder's head and made it to second safely for the second time of the game. She would make it home this time around as Sofia Tapia drove her in with a single to center field.

The Highlanders could only get one run in the inning and did not get another runner on base for the remainder of the game. However, Radford was able to get the Lancers in order in the bottom half of the fifth.

That wasn't the case in the bottom of the sixth as Karleigh Donovan gave the Lancers a 4-1 lead with a solo home run to left field.

With the game tied at two, Destiny Martinez reached on a fielding error with one out in the seventh. She moved to third after Kaylynn Batten doubled down the right field line. Four pitches later, Karleigh Donovan hit a single to right field that scored Martinez for the walk-off, and series clinching victory.

Realizing runs would come at a premium in the second game just as it did in the first, Radford played small ball after Marissa Gagliano led off the game with a walk. Sofia Tapia bunted her over to second and Gagliano reached third on a fielding error by Martinez at second base. Maggie Rowe hit a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Gagliano and give Radford a 1-0 lead.

Abby Morrow, who got the start in the circle, walked in a run in the second and tied the game at one. The inning should've been over, but an error – which should have been the second out – prolonged the inning.

The Lancers committed their second error of the game in the fifth inning and it came back to haunt them. Brianna Mills reached on Martinez's second error of the contest with no outs. The freshman stole second base on the next at-bat. The ensuing batter, Gagliano bunted Mills over to third. Following a Tapia walk, Talia Douglas singled through the left side and gave Radford a 2-1 lead after plating Mills.

Back-to-back base hits from Longwood in the second inning tied the game at two. Radford, who had the bottom of half of their order due up over the next two innings, couldn't get another runner on base.
