HIGHLANDERS HELD IN CHECK IN LOSS TO GEORGE WASHINGTON

GAME INFORMATION

  • Records: GW (7-1) | Radford (3-4)
  • Location: Cupp Stadium | Radford, Va.

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's lacrosse team kept it close early, but six straight goals from George Washington in the first half created a deficit too large to overcome, resulting in a 7-13 loss at Cupp Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The Colonials (7-1) wasted no time getting the scoring started. A foul called just 22 seconds into the match gave Katie Quinn a free position shot that she fired into the top right corner of the net to put the visitors up early. Radford (3-4) answered quickly though, thanks to an unassisted goal from junior attacker Juliette Ruland at the 25:37 mark.

Sophomore attacker Lindsey Carroll even put the Highlanders ahead 2-1 with 22:04 on the clock, but GW tied it back up with another free position shot at 21:30. That goal opened the flood gates for the Colonials, who scored five more goals between then and the 7:22 mark of the first half to build their lead to 8-2.

One more goal from each side made it 9-3 in favor of the Colonials heading into halftime.

Although George Washington scored the first goal of the second half, the Highlanders continued pushing to give themselves a chance. Carroll scored back-to-back spectacular goals with 24:34 and 22:59 left in the game, first scoring a jumping goal on a pass from Rogers and then finding the back of the net on a back-handed shot.

After another Quinn goal, Ruland netted her second goal of the day to bring Radford within five at 6-11 with 5:10 to go.

George Washington took full advantage of their possession clock, running down the game clock on every trip down the field to limit the Highlanders' chances. Caroline Kiernan scored twice in the final three minutes to pad their lead at 13-6, making junior midfielder Callie Bonnel's late goal too little too late.

Radford was only awarded one free position attempt compared to 10 for GW. The Highlanders were also whistled for a whopping 31 fouls while the Colonials got called for only 13 all game.

Ten different Highlanders collected at least one ground ball including a team-high four from both Brittany Rinaldi and Megan Hawken. Rinaldi also tied freshman defender Rachel Ator for a team0high three caused turnovers.

QUOTABLE
"We came out sloppy today and unfortunately that lead to us not having enough possessions to win the game. Our defense did a nice job forcing GW to turn the ball over, but we struggled to produce on the offensive end." - Head Coach Haley Marvine
