RADFORD, Va. – Radford dropped tough 5-4 decision to Gardner-Webb on a chilly Friday night in the New River Valley as the Runnin' Bulldogs plated three runs in the sixth inning for the comeback victory.

A night removed from a combined 30 runs on 28 hits, Friday night only saw nine runs on 14 hits. Gardner-Webb's bullpen held Radford hitless in the final three frames as the Highlanders tallied six total hits.

The Runnin' Bulldogs struck in the opening inning for the second straight night as Mason Fox led off the game with a double to left field, advancing to third on a ground out one batter later. Fox would eventually score on an Eric Jones ground ball to Radford starter Hunter Williams as the ball hit off Williams' glove, leaving the left-hander with only one play.

Radford's first hit of the night came on a Carlin Christian double down the right field line in the third. Kyle Butler moved Christian over on a ground out and Colby Higgerson did his job with a RBI ground out to short.

With the contest knotted, Spencer Horwitz single up the middle, while Andrew Szamski and Matt Roth loaded the bases on a pair of fielders' choices as the Highlanders made defensive plays difficult with foot speed.

Swinging a hot bat in the last seven games, Straton Podaras singled up the middle, plating Horwitz for his ninth RBI during the span. Szamski was thrown out at home by Chris Clary in center as the Highlanders were attempting to plate a third run in the frame.

Taking a 2-1 lead after three hits in the third inning, Williams looked to settle into a groove on the mound. The freshman punched out four over 5.2 innings on the mound, matching a season high in innings.

Gardner-Webb put its first two batters on in the fifth with a pair of singles, moving the runners up on a sacrifice bunt. Fox struck again with a line out to left field, just deep enough to plate a run, tying the game at two.

The tie was short lived as the Highlanders loaded up the bases again on a Higgerson walk, followed by singles from Horwitz and Szamski. With the bases juiced and only one out, Radford managed one run on a Roth sac fly to right field.

The Runnin' Bulldogs started to work on a wearing Williams in the sixth. After starting the inning with a fly out to center, Gardner-Webb put runners on via a four-pitch walk and hit batter.

Following a mound visit, Williams forced a fly out down the right field line, allowing a Bulldog to tag up. Taber Mongero knotted the game for the third time on the evening with a soft single through the left side, past a diving Roth at third base.

With two outs, pinch hitter JP McGuire came through with more than likely the biggest hit of his freshman campaign, greeting newly entered Andrew Nardi with a two-run single up the middle. The three-run frame put Gardner-Webb up 5-3.

Looking to battle back again, Radford put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom half of the inning after Matheny reached on a hit by pitch and Christian collected his second hit with a single through the right field. Butler got one run back, reaching on a RBI fielders' choice.

After Gardner-Webb starter Bradley Hallman wrapped up the sixth inning, he gave way to Jarrett Thompson, who held the Highlanders without a hit for the final three frames.

Earning the three-inning save, Thompson struck out six of the 10 batters he faced, yielding only a walk in his time. Shutting down the Radford offense for his fourth save on the season, Thompson helped the Runnin' Bulldogs take the series with 5-4 victory.

Cameron Fritz turned in a strong outing out of the Radford bullpen, allowing only one hit in 2.2 innings.
