CALDWELL GIVES RADFORD 4-3 WIN OVER TOLEDO

ORLANDO, Fla. – Alexandros Caldwell displayed his veteran leadership late in his No. 1 singles match as the junior battled back to lead Radford to a 4-3 decision over Toledo Wednesday night in the first of three-straight neutral site matches for the Highlanders.

Caldwell dropped his opening set 7-6 (7-4) to Vince Anzalone, before storming back for a 6-3, 6-0 decision to break the 3-3 tie. The win moves Caldwell to 2-0 in No. 1 singles.

Radford (4-3) opened the match by taking the doubles point. Toledo (3-9) controlled No. 1 doubles, however Caldwell teamed up with Rodrigo Magalhaes to take down Thawin Suksathaporn/Reid Teatsorth 6-1 in the No. 2 spot.

The Highlanders took the doubles point as Michiel Meekers and Matko Varga held off Serjen Olmedo and Anzalone for a 6-4 victory, starting Radford off a 1-0 lead.

"Today we played with more energy and it paid off in doubles," said head coach Rolando Vargas.

After Toledo evened the match 1-1 with a victory in No. 5 singles, Meekers defeated Teatsorth 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 as the Highlander experience shined again in No. 4 singles.

Varga picked up a big win in No. 2 singles with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 decision to move Radford within one point (3-2) of clinching the match. However, the match would come down to No. 1 singles as Toledo fought back to take No. 3 and 6 singles, locking the match at three all.

"Alex told his teammates to give it all on the court and once it came down to him, he showed so much poise and leadership," Vargas said. "He played a great third set as I could tell he wanted that moment. Matko and Michiel came out on fire. It was a great team effort but now we have to rest and get ready for tomorrow."

Caldwell's big win No. 1 singles moved him to 6-1 on the season as the Highlanders will look to continue their momentum on Thursday with a morning match against Xavier.
