RADFORD COLLECTS 6-1 WIN OVER CHARLESTON

RADFORD, Va. – As Radford closes out the 2018 regular season, the Highlanders picked up a 6-1 win over Charleston (W. Va.) in the first of two home weekend matches.

With the win, Radford ends its seven-game skid, while improving to 3-3 in home matches.

"We started playing solid doubles and that set the tone for the match. It was an overall solid performance," said head coach Rolando Vargas. "This time we converted on key points. We have to stay focused for Saturday's match against Hampton."

The Highlanders dominated doubles play, sweeping through the three matches. Alexandros Caldwell and Rodrigo Magalhaes opened with a 6-0 victory in No. 2 doubles. The win moves the duo to 11-4 on the season in doubles play.

Robin Calais and Michiel Meekers followed with a 6-1 decision and Matko Varga and Carlos Sala sent the Highlanders into singles play with a 6-3 win in No. 1 doubles.

Caldwell wasted little time in singles action, improving to 14-6 on the year with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 3 singles. Meekers followed with his 15^th win in No. 4 singles as he put Radford up 3-0 with a pair of 6-2 wins.

Calais won his No. 6 singles match 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Highlanders, while Varga moved to 12-8 in singles after taking a 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles.

Magalhaes closed out Radford's wins on the day with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in No.1 singles to improve to 11-8 overall.

Charleston's lone win in the match came in No 5 singles as Jason Prince battled Sala for a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) win.

The Highlanders conclude the regular season on Saturday, hosting future Big South foe Hampton in a 9 a.m., match.
