RADFORD CLOSES OUT REG. SEASON WITH 4-2 WIN OVER HAMPTON

RADFORD, Va. – Radford concluded its 2018 regular season slate with a non-conference battle against future Big South foe Hampton on Saturday morning as the Highlanders picked up their 10th win with a 4-2 decision.

"Today, we came out with a sense of urgency in singles because of a slow start in doubles. That was the key because we were able to win five first sets and had set points in the one we lost 7-6," said head coach Rolando Vargas. "We had a goal of reaching 10 wins so the guys really wanted this match. It's always a good sign when you are able to win a match after losing the doubles point. Now we go with a little momentum to the conference tournament."

Improving to 4-3 at home, Radford had to battle back from an early deficit as Hampton took the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.

Radford's lone doubles win came in the No. 2 spot as Alexandros Caldwell and Rodrigo Magalhaes finished the regular season with a 12-4 mark in doubles, taking a 6-2 victory.

Michiel Meekers opened up singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Luke Thompson in the No. 4 spot. The win gave Meekers 16 wins in the regular season, most by a Highlander in 2018.

After Meekers knotted the match, Robin Calais handed Radford a 2-1 lead as he collected a 6-2, 6-4 win over Basil Post in No. 6 singles.

Radford proceeded to take the next two singles matches and clinch the victory.

Magalhaes handed Fernando Fernandes a 6-1, 6-2 loss in No. 2 singles as the sophomore improved to 12-9 on the season.

The Highlanders fourth win on the day came via Caldwell in No. 3 singles as he continued his strong junior campaign. Caldwell won 6-2, 6-4 to move to 15-6 overall.

Hampton closed out singles play with Matt Foster-Estwick taking a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) win over Matko Varga in No. 1 singles.

The No. 5 singles match was left unfinished as the women's match followed the men's. Charles Hudson was leading Carlos Sala 7-6 (8-6), 2-1 when the match was called due to time constraints.

Radford will face top-seeded Winthrop on Monday in the Big South Tournament Quarterfinals set for a 8 a.m., start in Rock Hill, S.C.
