SOFTBALL DROPS HARD-FOUGHT DOUBLEHEADER TO LIBERTY

RADFORD, Va. – Saturday featured two games and both of them were pitcher's duels, but Radford couldn't get the timely hits it needed, dropping the doubleheader and the series to Liberty 3-1 and 1-0, respectively, at the Radford Softball Stadium.

Radford was held to only four hits combined in both games of the doubleheader, but was in it the whole time thanks to standout performances by Kayla Huffman and Abby Morrow.

GAME ONE
  • Score: Liberty 3, Radford 1
  • Records: Flames (31-12, 11-3 Big South) | Highlanders (22-14, 6-5 Big South)
  • Location: Radford Softball Stadium | Radford, Va.

The Highlanders were still riding high on the momentum of their nine-inning victory on Friday night and struck first in game two of the series.

Radford had two of their first three batters on base as Hannah Medlam drew a one-out walk and Sofia Tapia was hit by a pitch. After a groundout, Maggie Rowe delivered with a two-out single that plated Medlam for the 1-0 Highlander lead.

Kayla Huffman was lights out striking out five batters through the first three innings, but chaos hit in the fourth inning.

Autumn Bishop began the inning with a leadoff double, she made it to third and the Flames had one more runner on second. Bishop tied the game scoring on a muffed throw at first base. Sarah Robertson the other Flame runner scored on the next at-bat as McFarland hit an RBI single.

The final run of the inning scored on an error by Rowe at the plate on a sacrifice fly to left field. The throw beat Via by five steps, but Rowe fell due to a minor collision and the ball popped out of her glove as she fell to the ground to brace her fall. The run gave Liberty a 3-1 lead.

Radford had a chance in the bottom of the frame getting the first two runners aboard, but three outs later the threat was gone. The biggest scoring chance came in the sixth inning, with the tying at second base. However, Julia DiMartino earned her fourth save of the season and got a clutch strikeout to end the inning.

It was a great effort by Abby Morrow in the circle, but one mistake was the difference in the rubber match and it came in the fifth inning.

Kaitlin McFarland hit a 1-2 pitch over the fence in left center field to lead off the inning. The Flames threated once more later in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, but what appeared to be an average sac fly made the game 2-0 with two outs was quickly the end of the inning. Taylor Hoffman who would've scored the second run of the game left third base early and was out on an appeal.

However, the momentum swing didn't matter, as the Highlanders weren't able to get a base runner aboard in the final three frames.

The only hit from the Highlanders came in the second inning when Hunter Mundy reached on a two out single through the left side of the infield. Radford only was able to get one more base runner for the remainder of the game as Brianna Mills drew a leadoff walk in the third inning.

She made it to second with no outs, but two strikeouts and a groundout to Sarah Robertson, the Liberty shortstop, ended the threat.

Morrow was wheeling and dealing through four innings and also saw great defense with an inning ending double play in the third inning, but exited the game with the bases loaded in the fifth. The senior turned the ball over to Kayla Huffman, who pitched 2.2 innings and only allowed one hit.
