HIGHLANDERS BOUNCE BACK IN SWEEP OVER NORFOLK STATE

NORFOLK, Va. – The Radford softball team will head back to the New River Valley with two more wins after a midweek doubleheader sweep over Norfolk State on Wednesday. The Highlanders took game one, 7-1 and finished off the Spartans in game two, 8-3.

The Highlanders combined for 19 hits in two games as four different players had multi-hit games. Radford also took advantage of nine miscues by Norfolk Sate in the doubleheader sweep and remains unbeaten in 14 meetings with the Spartans.

GAME ONE
  • Score: Radford 7, Norfolk State 1
  • Records: Highlanders (23-15) | Spartans (19-25)
  • Location: NSU Softball Field | Norfolk, Va.

Radford took advantage of five Norfolk State errors and scored seven runs on 10 hits in the opener. The Highlanders were able to play every player besides the other two pitchers on the roster.

It didn't matter because the other two pitchers were not needed, as Marvin was able to pick up her second win and second complete game of the season. She only allowed four hits all game and they all came in the fifth inning. The freshman also gave up a run in that inning, but it was the only run of the game for Norfolk State.

The early innings were the key for Radford as all seven of its runs came in the first three innings. With runners at the corners in the first inning, Talia Douglas put a ball in play that scored Marissa Gagliano from third and gave Radford a 1-0 lead.

Hannah Medlam hit a single to center field and advanced to second on the second Norfolk State error in the inning. Maggie Rowe made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single before a fly out ended the inning.

Marissa Yow led off the second inning with her third double of the season and Maddrey drove her in with her fourth double of the year. The Spartans' third error of the contest extended the inning and placed runners at second and third with one out. Tapia made the error a costly one with a sacrifice fly to left field that gave the Highlanders a 4-0 advantage.

The third inning began with a Medlam double to right center and was quickly followed with a home run by Rowe. The senior catcher took the first pitch she saw over the fence in left field and gave Radford a 6-0 lead. Following a pop out and another NSU error, back-to-back singles loaded the bases for Gagliano. She hit a towering fly ball to left field that was deep enough to plate Yow for the Highlanders' seventh run of the game.

Radford only had four more base runners and two hits for the remainder of the game, but didn't have any issues as Marvin retired eight of the final nine batters she faced en route to the win.

GAME TWO
  • Score: Radford 8, Norfolk State 3
  • Records: Highlanders (24-15) | Spartans (19-26)
  • Location: NSU Softball Field | Norfolk, Va.

Late inning rallies led Radford to score eight unanswered, tying its largest deficit overcome this season en route to an 8-3 victory in game two.

Trailing 3-0 in the fourth inning, Mills tied it up with one swing of the bat and a no-doubter to left field. Douglas led off the inning with a single through the left side. The ensuing batter, Medlam, reached with a single to straightaway center field and put two runners on for Mills, who made it a 3-3 game.

With two outs in the fifth, Douglas doubled down the left field line. The double was her third hit of the afternoon, which tied a season-high for the freshman. She scored from second on the very next play after Jaylene Porter, the Spartan second baseman, booted the ball and it went into center field. The run gave Radford a 4-3 lead.

The Highlanders extended their lead with four insurance runs in the sixth taking a comfortable 8-3 lead. Gagliano stepped into the batters box with the bases juiced and no outs. She hit a ball to left field that scored one, but Shelby DeSchamps misplayed the ball and allowed two more runs to come in and Gagliano to get to third while taking a 7-3 lead. It didn't matter for Sofia Tapia, who would've driven in the runs anyway when she doubled down the right field line. The double easily allowed Gagliano to score from third and gave the Highlanders an 8-3 lead.

Norfolk State didn't go down with out a fight and loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the frame. However, the Spartans couldn't get any of the runners to advance as two consecutive groundouts ended the inning.

NSU took an early 3-0 lead as Kylee Lopez, the team leader in home runs, did what she's good at and hit a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the first. An RBI double, followed by and RBI single in the second inning increased the 1-0 lead to 3-0 until the Highlanders busted through in the fourth.

  • Tyra Byrd walked and eventually scored a run. A different player scored each run in the victory.

QUOTABLE
"It was great to see us bounce back the way we did after two tough losses last weekend. Jessie was great in the circle and had a no-hitter through four innings. She had one inning that got away from her, but she had a great outing. We did a good job offensively at the plate and it should boost us going forward into a conference series." - Hope Creasy
