RADFORD, Va. – Garrett Matheny put together the best offensive performance of his young Radford career with a three-hit game on two home runs, including a grand slam in the seventh that put the game out of reach in a 12-6 series opening win over Charleston Southern.

Matheny went 3 for 4 at the plate with a season best five RBIs, while scoring three runs for the third time on the season and second in two games. The two-home run game was the second by a Highlander this season with both coming in Big South play.

Tallying all five of his round-trippers in league action, Matheny was joined by Straton Podaras, Spencer Horwitz and Kyle Butler in the multi-hit category as Radford totaled 13 hits.

Of Radford's first five runs of the game, none were via a base hit. The Highlanders opened the game with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Butler as a leadoff single from Carlin Christian followed by a stolen base and throwing error set up the first run.

Charleston Southern's third error in the first two innings resulted in Radford's second run in the second inning. Continuing their streak of runs, the Highlanders plated two more in the third on a pair of RBI ground outs from Matt Roth and Podaras.

The Buccaneers' first four runs came on doubles as Ryan Stoudemire was responsible for three of the runs on a RBI double in the second and a two-run two-bagger in the fourth inning.

Charleston Southern knotted the game with a two-out double off the bat of Kyle Vesnesky that plated Stoudemire for the 4-4 tie in the fourth. The duo was responsible for four of the Bucs' six hits with each finishing with two-hit games.

The Highlanders regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame as Matheny lined a single to left field. Showing off his speed, Matheny swiped second and third base. The two stolen bases led to a Christian RBI fielders' choice chopper in front of the mound as Evan Nations decided to throw home. The wide throw allowed Matheny to slide in safely, breaking the tie.

Following Radford being held scoreless for the first time on the night in the fifth, Matheny launched his first home run of the night over the left field fence, extending Radford's lead to 6-4 in the sixth inning. The freshman's first four career home runs came as solo shots.

Radford added five runs in the seventh on four hits as the Highlanders tallied three straight hits to start the inning. Horwitz led off with a double to shallow left field and Colby Higgerson followed with a bunt single. Following a Higgerson stolen base, Podaras singled into left field for his second multi-RBI game of the season.

Will Harless earned a one-out walk to load the bases for Matheny. Working the count to 2-2, Matheny sent a Stoudemire pitch deep into the night for Radford's first grand slam of 2018, ballooning the lead to 11-4.

Charleston Southern answered with a two-run home run off the bat of Christian Maggio in the eighth for his first collegiate home run.

Radford got a run back in the bottom half of the frame, crossing the plate as a result of Charleston Southern's fifth error of the game, sealing the 12-6 series opening victory.

Picking up the Highlander win in relief was Cameron Fritz as he came on the fourth, tossing four innings of relief with the only blemishes coming in the frame on the two doubles, three runs. The outing gave Fritz his third win of the season.
