RADFORD, Va. – Radford collected its third straight Big South series win after receiving a dominating effort from Ryan Sande and Kyle Palmer on the mound as the Highlanders avenged Saturday's 3-1 loss to Charleston Southern with a 3-1 victory on Sunday.

Radford's pitching staff held the Buccaneers to only five hits, including one in the last four frames, needing only 112 pitches to retire the 34 batters it faced.

Picking up his first of 2018, Sande's yielded only two hits in the first three innings as a result of a bizarre second inning two-out situation. Charleston Southern placed two runners on base as a result of a single and a walk.

With two outs, Jack Delongchamps doubled off the left-center field wall to plate the first two runs of the game. However, a signal from Radford's dugout to give the ball to Spencer Horwitz and touch first base on an appeal that Delongchamps did not touch the base on his way to second.

First base umpire Reid Churchill ruled that Delongchamps did indeed not touch first, resulting in chaos between both dugouts to find out if the runs count or not. Following a meeting between the crew, a 30-minute recess broke out as the crew left the diamond to determine the correct ruling on the situation.

Very similar to same scenario in the 1908 National League pennant between the New York Giants and Chicago Cubs, the runs and hit were erased from the scoreboard as Delongchamps did not legally obtain a base for the runs to count.

The momentum change was not in favor of Radford's dugout, while giving the Highlanders new life.

Sande's only blemish of the day came in the fourth as Mike Sconzo led off the inning with a double and scored on an Aaron Miller triple to right-center the fell in front of a diving Carlin Christian.

The Radford deficit was short lived as Horwitz launched a first pitch no-doubter over the right field fence to knot the game on only the third Highlander hit of the game. The round-tripper was the sixth on the season for Horwitz as five of them have come in Big South play.

Matt Roth followed with a double to left-center for the first of his two doubles on the day and his second hit in as many at bats. Roth tagged up, moving to third on a Straton Podaras fly out. Radford would load the bases with two outs on a Garrett Matheny walk and Anthony Miano hit by pitch.

The second run of the frame would come on a Christian squeeze bunt between the third base line and pitcher's mound. Buc starter Cody Maw came off the rubber, fielding the ball and flipping to home. Maw's flip was not in time as Roth crossed the plate safely.

With the 2-1 lead, Sande's opportunity to earn his first win looked bright as he held Charleston Southern to four hits over five frames, walking only two with two punch outs.

Palmer took over for Sande in the sixth, giving up a two-out single, which turned out to be the last Buccaneer hit. Entering the game with a career-high 2.2 innings pitched, Palmer turned in a four-inning save that saw only one base runner.

The redshirt-senior earned his third save on the season, retiring the last 10 batters he faced. Palmer's third save of 2018 gave him four in his career.

Radford's final run of the game came on a wild pitch in the eighth inning as the Highlanders earned their second home series win.
