POWER AND PITCHING GIVE RADFORD 12-1 VICTORY OVER VIRGINIA

GAME INFORMATION

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Nine hits, including two home runs, and a season-high 12 runs scored gave Radford its highest margin of victory this season in a 12-1 win over ACC foe Virginia on Tuesday night in Charlottesville, Va.

Seven is a magic number and Radford (18-12) showed it by scoring seven runs in the seventh inning. However, two runs is all the Highlanders needed thanks to stellar pitching from Abby Morrow (12-7) and Jessie Marvin.

Radford controlled a 5-1 lead that increased to 6-1 after a bases loaded walk plated Talia Douglas in the seventh inning. After a Virginia (11-25) pitching change, two more runs scored on back-to-back wild pitches. The lead was 8-1 until Brianna Mills cleared the bases with a three-run jack to straight away center.

Mills' home run gave Radford an 11-1 lead with no outs in the inning. Lauren Maddrey reached base with a one-out double and later scored on another Cavalier wild pitch for the 12th run of the game.

The Highlanders have scored seven first inning runs over the last four games after jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded and one-out Hannah Medlam ripped a ball past the first baseman and drove in the first run of the game. Marissa Yow reached on a fielder's choice that scored Douglas on the ensuing at-bat.

Virginia cut the lead in half with a bases loaded walk, but a huge double play ended the scoring threat as UVA left a couple of runners stranded.

Both teams settled down and hung zeros on the board in the second, third and fourth innings with the help of some extra-effort defensive plays. But the bats woke up for Radford, more importantly Maggie Rowe in the fifth. With Sofia Tapia and Douglas aboard and two outs in the inning, Rowe stepped in and bombed the first pitch she saw to center field. The bases clearing hit gave Radford a secure 5-1 lead.

Marvin got the start in the circle and allowed one run on two hits and two walks in two innings of work. Morrow took over and pitched five scoreless innings. She allowed five hits, no walks and struck out one.

The win gives Radford multiple ACC wins over the last two years, both of which came against Virginia Tech and Virginia.
