RADFORD TALLIES 23 HITS IN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT; SERIES FINALE MOVED TO SUNDAY

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Radford softball team combined for 23 hits, including a season-high 13 in the 8-0 series opening victory over Campbell and tallied 10 in the 7-6 extra inning nightcap loss on Friday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. Due to the inclement weather in Saturday's forecast, the rubber match will be moved to Sunday at 1 p.m.

Hannah Medlam stole the show for Radford (19-13, 4-4 Big South) as she had six of the Highlanders' 23 hits. She went 3-for-3 in the first game and 3-for-4 in the second, both tying a career high. The junior combined for two runs and two RBIs as well.

GAME ONE
  • Score: Radford 8, Campbell 0 (5 innings)
  • Records: Highlanders (19-12, 4-3 Big South) | Fighting Camels (17-21, 5-8 Big South)
  • Location: Amanda Littlejohn Stadium | Buies Creek, N.C.

Radford began the scoring brigade in the second inning with five runs. Medlam led off the inning with her first hit of the afternoon, a single up the middle. With one out in the inning, Hunter Mundy blasted a 3-2 pitch to left field that landed over the fence. The two-run blast gave Radford an early lead.

The inning was just getting started when Marissa Gagliano plated Brianna Mills with a triple to left field just two-at bats after the round-tripper. The Gagliano RBI gave the Highlanders a 3-0 advantage. On the succeeding at-bat Sofia Tapia drove in Gagliano with a single and later scored on a Talia Douglas to right center field.

The five runs came on five hits and gave the Highlanders a commanding lead. Just as she did in the second, Medlam started the third inning with a single. She came around to score on a Mills single to left field that extended the Highlanders lead to 6-0.

Radford could smell blood in the water and added two more runs in the fourth inning. This time the Highlanders scored with two outs in the inning. Maggie Rowe added an RBI to her team-leading 22 this season with a double to in the right field gap that made it a 7-0 game. Medlam drove in her lone run of the contest with her third hit of the afternoon. The Medlam RBI initiated the eight run-rule.

Enter, Kayla Huffman, who sat the Fighting Camels down in order extending her streak to 16 straight batters retired. She picked up four strikeouts through two innings to close out the game.

Abby Morrow (13-7) started the game and settled down nicely after what could've been a rocky first inning. Three singles with only one out in the first inning put runners at every base for Campbell, but a strikeout and a groundout to Douglas at third ended the scoring threat. Morrow only surrendered three more hits for the remainder of her outing. She struck out three and didn't allow any walks.

  • Loss: Megan Richards (12-8) | (4.0 IP, 13 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

  • Eight different Highlanders recorded hits, while four of them had multi-hit games.
  • Medlam tied a career-high with three hits. She scored two runs and drove in one.
  • The top three batters (Gagliano, Tapia and Douglas) had two hits apiece. Tapia scored twice while Gagliano scored once. Each of them drove in one RBI.
  • Mundy had the only multi-RBI contest of the game with her two-run home run.
  • The Fighting Camels were held scoreless as the Highlanders picked up their seventh shutout this season.
  • The win gave Radford its longest winning streak of the year surpassing the four-game wining streak to begin the season.

GAME TWO
  • Score: Campbell 7, Radford 6 (8 innings)
  • Records: Fighting Camels (18-21, 6-8 Big South) | Highlanders (19-13, 4-4 Big South)
  • Location: Amanda Littlejohn Stadium | Buies Creek, N.C.
Radford showed resiliency in the second game of the doubleheader, but fell in a heartbreaking extra innings loss.

After falling behind 2-0, Marissa Yow and Lauren Maddrey got in on the hit parade. Yow doubled to left field with one-out and Maddrey drove her in with a clutch two-out double. The lead was cut to one run. However, the Camels extended their lead to four on a Rachel McCollum home run.

The 5-1 lead became 6-1 when Bri Bryant hit a solo home run – her second of the game – to left field in the fourth inning.

Knowing time was running out, the Highlanders had to make some noise and they did just that. Radford had runners on the corners with one out in the fifth inning when none other than the RBI leader herself stepped to the plate. Maggie Rowe delivered with a double off the wall that scored two and cut the deficit in half, 6-3.

The next batter up was red-hot Hannah Medlam. She blooped a single that landed right in front of the charging center fielder. Pinch runner, Tyra Byrd, raced around third and scored. Medlam advanced to second on the throw and made it to third as the ball got away from the catcher.

The 6-4 lead for Campbell remained intact as the inning ended on a fly out to center field. Back-to-back walks were how the sixth inning began for Radford. Sofia Tapia blasted a ball in the left center field gap that drove in Brittany Wratchford from second and Mills from first. The one-out double tied the game at six and gave Radford runners at second and third. The Highlanders couldn't push any other runs across and left two stranded in scoring position.

Each team left one runner on base in the seventh and sent the game into extra innings. The Highlanders left the go-ahead run at second base in the top of the eighth and Campbell took advantage.

The Fighting Camels recorded consecutive hits and drew a four-pitch walk tat loaded the bases. Melissa Tullar hit a slow seeing-eye single past the diving gloves of Douglas at third and Gagliano at short that scored Rachel McCollum and gave Campbell the 7-6 walk-off win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Win: Haley Hutchins (4-6) | (8.0 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K)
  • Loss: Abby Morrow (13-8) | (5.0 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K)
  • The Highlanders had double-digit hits four the fourth time this season and have had at least nine hits in five consecutive games.
  • Marissa Gagliano reached base for the 33rd time in a row – 32nd time this season – and now holds the record for consecutive games reaching base safely. She passed Kristen Shifflet, who previously held the record with 31.
  • Medlam added to her career-high night with another three hit game. She went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
  • Gagliano had the other multi-hit game with two, while Tapia and Rowe drove in four of the six runs, with two RBIs each.
  • Radford left 10 runners on base, while Campbell left eight.
  • All but two of Campbell's runs came via the long ball.

QUOTABLE
"Today was almost like a tale of two games. We did a lot of great things in the first game and didn't do a lot of great things in the second. We hit the ball well in both games, but left a lot of runners on base in the second game. Our defense needs to improve moving forward and we need to put game two out of our heads and get ready to take the series on Sunday." - Hope Creasy

ON DECK
There will be no game on Saturday due to inclement weather in the area. The rubber match between the Highlanders and Fighting Camels will be slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.
