FARMVILLE, Va. – Radford picked up its first Big South series win of 2018 as the Highlanders split a wild doubleheader with Longwood Sunday afternoon with both games going 10 innings each.

Game One

For the second straight game, Radford struck first as Matt Roth collected his seventh RBI of the series on a RBI ground out to open the first inning.

The Highlanders added two more runs in the third as Colby Higgerson lined Radford's 12th triple of the season down the right field line to plate Carlin Christian and Kyle Butler, who reached via two-out walks.

Radford starter Austin Ross took the three runs and went to work. Ross retired the first 12 batters he faced, losing his perfect bid on a leadoff walk in the fifth. The redshirt senior used a fielders' choice and two strikeouts to go into the sixth with a no-hit bid.

Ross worked a six-pitch sixth inning, catching a pop up bunt off the bat of Sammy Miller, working six hitless frames.

Longwood roughed up Ross in the seventh as Justin Mitchell reached on a fielding error, but two pitches later got a 6-4-3 double play. Following a two-out walk to Jack Schnell, Ryan Shull ended Ross' no-hit bid with a triple to right-center, hitting off the tip of Christian's glove as he almost made the sprinting play to the warning track.

Austin Gerber relieved Ross in the frame as the Lancers added a second run off a Radford throwing error on a stolen base attempt that allowed Shull to score.

After Radford stranded a runner in the eighth, Longwood knotted the game in the bottom half on a Miller two-out home run to left field. The senior's first collegiate home run changed the momentum of the contest.

Nothing by either team in the ninth, Radford headed to extras for the fifth time on the season. Will Harless and Christian walked with two outs in the 10th, but were stranded on a Butler ground out.

Longwood put its first two runners on base to start the bottom half of the frame, following a ground out that moved the two runners into scoring position, Radford walked the bases loaded to set up the double play.

The Lancers walked it off on a Nate Blakeney ground ball to the six hole as Higgerson made the backhand play, throwing onto Butler for the second out as the Highlanders were unable to turn the double play on the fielders' choice.

Win: Michael Catlin (3-2) (0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K)
Loss: Trey Alderman (0-3) (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

Game Two

For the first time in the series, Longwood opened a game with a run in the first as Miller doubled to left-center. Moving to third on a balk, Miller came around to score on a wild pitch for the early Lancer lead.

After allowing the early run, Radford starter Ryan Sande settled down, limiting the Lancers to only three hits over five innings. Sande worked around three walks, stranding four runners during his time on the mound.

Sande was given a lead in the third as Garrett Matheny reached on a throwing error to start, moving to second as the errant throw skipped into shallow right field. Matheny later advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Christian knotted the contest with a double off the left field fence. Following a Butler hit by pitch, Higgerson put down a sac bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Spencer Horwitz lifted a ball just deep enough into left to plate Christian as Radford regained a 2-1 lead.

Stranding 29 runners in the doubleheader, Radford left two runners in scoring position to end the third.

The Highlanders extended the lead to two runs as Butler led off the fifth with a double to left field and Higgerson reached on a four-pitch walk. After Horwitz grounded into a fielders' choice, Radford had runners on the corners with one out.

Butler caught Longwood catcher Mac McCafferty off guard, racing home as he flipped the ball back to Travis Morgan on the mound. The Butler stolen base was the first of five Radford stolen bases in the game. Unable to plate another run in the inning, Radford left the bases juiced in the frame.

The Highlanders only collected two hits over the next three frames, adding what turned out to be the most important run of the game in the eighth on a fielding error with the bases loaded to push the lead to 4-1.

Radford's eighth inning run was key as Mitchell lifted a two-run home run down the right field line, inching Longwood within 4-3. After Brandon Donovan followed with a hit by pitch, Radford went to its bullpen as Mack Krupp came on to face two left-hander batters.

Krupp got a strikeout, but allowed a walk to put two Lancers on base. Cameron Fritz relieved Krupp after the two lefty matchups, getting Jawan McAllister to fly out to center field.

As the runner tagged up from second, Christian's throw to third bounced to Roth, allowing the second Lancer to tag up from first base. Roth's throw to nab the runner at second, sailed into right field as Longwood knotted the game at four on Radford's first miscue of the game.

Radford stranded a runner on second and Longwood left two in scoring position in the ninth as neither team was able to earn the win in the regulation.

Higgerson opened extras with a single to right-center and a perfectly executed hit-and-run by Horwitz through the left side put Highlanders on the corners. Following a Roth foul out, Harless stepped into the box with a bunt situation after Radford picked up its first out in the frame.

Harless placed the bunt down the first base line as Higgerson broke home. Mitchell flipped toward home in attempt to tag Higgerson, which allowed Harless to advance to second. Horwitz was thrown out at third trying to advance in the chaos.

The sac bunt was enough as Kyle Palmer worked out of a two-out bloop double with three ground outs in the frame to earn his first save since April 3, 2015 as Radford picked up its first Big South series win of the season.

Win: Cameron Fritz (1-0) (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K)
Loss: Eric Harp (1-5) (2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K)
Save: Kyle Palmer (1)
