HIGHLANDERS DRAW WITH RED FLASH IN SEASON OPENER



RADFORD, Va. – Four goals were scored in 110 minutes of play as each team answered shortly after a go-ahead goal was scored. Unfortunately, the Highlanders couldn't push ahead and drew, 2-2, with Saint Francis (Pa.) in the season opening match on Thursday night at Cupp Stadium.
 
Just seven minutes into the game, Saint Francis struck first as Heather Markiewicz took advantage of a ball that was misplayed the Highlander keeper. Markiewicz dribbled past the keeper, who came out a little too quick to play the ball, and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
 
Less than a minute later, Nelia Perez was fouled inside the box and Radford was awarded a penalty kick. Jordan Lundin took the shot and scored her first goal since Oct. 12, 2016 for the equalizer.
 
After the Highlanders controlled most of the possession for the second half, Helena Gonzalez played a superb long ball to Jessica Wollmann, who made a move past the defender just inside the 18-yard box and blasted a shot to the right of the keeper for the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute.
 
It was only three minutes later when a handball was called on the Highlanders inside the penalty box and the Red Flash were awarded a penalty kick. Courtenay Kaplan got a finger on the ball off the foot of Mariana Jaleca, but it was just wide enough to go past Kaplan and tie game at two.
 
Both teams were close to scoring, but neither team could convert the remainder of their 17 shots and opening night ended in a draw for each side.
 
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
In the 74th minute of the match, tied at two, a foul was called and a yellow card was given to a Highlander defender, which resulted in SFU's second penalty kick of the night. The kick went nailed the crossbar and went out of play, which kept the tie intact.
 
STAT OF THE MATCH
Kaplan saw 11 shots after Saint Francis (Pa.) scored their second goal. None of the shots were good and Kaplan tallied four of her five saves in that stretch.
 
TEAM LEADERS
Jasmine Casarez led the team with six shots, with three on goal, while her fellow senior Wollmann had four shots with three on target and one goal scored.
 
QUOTABLE
"I thought it was a even hard fought game by both sides," Ben Sohrabi said. "I liked our toughness throughout the game. We made a few mistakes and they capitalized on them, but I think we have shown improvement through preseason. To tie the reigning Northeast Conference champs in our first game is a good start."
