DODSON HELPS HOYAS DOWN HIGHLANDERS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Radford men's soccer team was downed, 2-0, by Georgetown thanks to a pair of goals from Derek Dodson at Shaw Field on Friday afternoon.

The Highlanders (0-3) failed to find the back of the net once again, this time against a stingy Georgetown defense that features the preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year in Brendan McDonough. The Hoyas owned a 22-10 advantage in shots including a 7-4 difference in shots on goal.

It was in the 14th minute when the Hoyas broke through and took the lead on their home turf. Kyle Zajec dribbled towards goal, forcing Radford goalkeeper Dimitrios Valkanos to come off his line to challenge. Zajec made a quick decision and passed to Derek Dodson for the goal.

Then, in the 56th minute, Dodson bagged a brace with his second goal of the day and his third of the season. The sophomore received a double assist from teammates Dylan Nealis and Achara before sending a shot from the middle of the box past the Highlanders to double to lead.

Despite the two goals allowed, Valkanos fared well between the pipes. The Highlanders had collected four saves all season before he made four of his own against the Hoyas.

VALKANOS' DEBUT
Valkanos drew the start at goalkeeper, marking his first career start and his first career appearance period. The Colchester, Conn. native redshirted in 2017 and retained a year of eligibility.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Coming into Friday's match, junior goalkeeper Robbie Johnson was the only Highlander to have played all 180 minutes across two matches this season. Coach Hancock decided to keep a tighter rotation this time around and played Edwards, Pape Oumar Gueye, Roberts, Ilgner, Yorke and Valkanos the entire 90 against Georgetown.

CORNER KICK OPPORTUNITIES
Radford earned a season-high eight corner kicks compared to just four for the Hoyas on Friday. That brings the Highlanders' ratio to 17-8 on the season, but they're still chasing that elusive first goal of the season. With a high volume of set piece opportunities, that goal very well may come from a corner kick sooner than later.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders return to the Commonwealth of Virginia to take on James Madison in Harrisonburg next Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7 pm. The Dukes (1-1) are in their first season under new head coach Paul Zazenski.
