DIOP SCORES ON RAINY NIGHT AT JAMES MADISON


 
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Radford men's soccer team finally opened its 2018 account with a goal in the 28th minute, but ultimately fell, 3-1, to James Madison on a rainy Saturday night at Sentara Park.
 
After 297 scoreless minutes ticked by to open the season, the Highlanders finally exorcised their demons with a goal. Just minutes after coming on as a substitute, sophomore defender Max-Emilios Angelides pushed high and collected a long pass in the box. He turned and connected with the head of freshman forward Amadou Macky Diop for the goal.
 
The Dukes took over the scoring from there, however, punching in three unanswered goals to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
 
Tom Judge found the equalizer in the 35th minute when Brandon Clegg played him in behind the defense who was holding a high line. Judge fired from 20 yards out and his right-footed rocket hit the top right corner.
 
JMU added to its lead in the 69th and 73rd minutes on goals from Billy Metzler and Fernando Casero. The Highlanders sent extra numbers forward, but couldn't make their way back into the match in the final minutes.
 
STAT OF THE MATCH
The final score line didn't necessarily tell the whole story for Radford, who seemed to hold an advantage in most statistical categories. The Highlanders led in shots (10-9), saves (5-3) and corner kicks (8-2) while tying the Dukes in shots on goal (6-6).
 
SEASON-OPENING GOALSCORER
Over the last nine years dating back to 2010, Radford has had a different player score the team's first goal of the season each season. Macky Diop (2018) joins Sivert Daehlie (2017), Garland Smith (2016), Finn Tiedemann (2015), Mauricio Rancel (2014), Bernardo Ulmo (2013), Lucas Diniz (2012), Lucas Grande (2011) and Brian Gwanzura (2010).

UP NEXT
Radford's five-game road trip to open the season comes to a close next Tuesday, Sept. 11 when the squad travels to Myrtle Beach to take on No. 18 Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers suffered a 4-0 loss to UCLA to start the season, but have gone 3-0 since including an overtime win over Georgetown.
