RADFORD SPLITS IN DAY ONE OF REDHAWKS INVITATIONAL

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Radford volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday, the opening day of the Redhawks Invitational, as they dropped a four-set match (22-25, 23-25, 25-17, 19-25) to Northwestern State to open the day but bounced back to sweep Southeast Missouri (25-23, 25-17, 25-11) in the nightcap.

In the first match of the day, the Highlanders hitting percentage faltered as Radford only hit above .300 once and it came in the first set (.375). Despite having one less kill than Northwestern State, it was not enough to keep up with the Demons in the four set loss.

Valerie Gonzalez and Amaya Rousseau tallied 10 kills each, leading the team. Rousseau led all players with a .615 attack percentage. Haley Kleespies gets a few assists closer to breaking the all-time assists record at Radford as she tallied 39 through four sets.

SET ONE
The Highlanders took a 3-1 lead, but Northwestern State battled back and eventually took a 13-12 lead. Mallory McKnight had back-to-back kills that gave Radford a 14-13 advantage, but the Demons ended the opening set on a 12-8 run and clinched the set, 25-22.

SET TWO
The Demons hit .364 and posted 12 kills with three service aces and three blocks en route to a second set victory. The Highlanders fell behind 22-17 and went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 22, but NSU scored three of the last four points and won 25-23.

SET THREE
The third set was back and forth between the two teams, but Radford took over 16-11 midway through the set. However, down 18-12 the Demons scored five straight and cut the Highlander lead to one, 18-17. Radford cruised scored seven straight and won the third set 25-17.

SET FOUR
An 8-2 run that gave the Demons a 10-6 lead was the difference maker in the fourth set. The run kept going as NSU went up 17-10. The Highlanders fought and scratched and cut the deficit to five, 22-17, but the Demons scored three of the last five points and clinched the match on a Madeline Drake kill.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Kleespies tallied 39 assists and totaled 11 digs for her first double-double of the season.

RADFORD vs. SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
It was a tale of two matches for the Highlanders as they outscored Southeast Missouri 75-51 and won the three set match in the final game on Friday.

Neast was the only Highlander with double-digit kills and tallied a .476 attack percentage. As a team Radford totaled a .333 hit percentage and had eight more kills than the Redhawks. Kleespies and Alyssa Carruth added two service aces each in the nightcap.

SET ONE
This was the closest set of the match, but it didn't begin that way at the start. Southeast Missouri opened the match with a 9-3 run, but the Highlanders kept chipping away and a Kylie Tuxford kill tied the opening set at 20. SEMO scored two of the next three points, but three Redhawk errors gave Radford a 24-22 lead. Laney Malloy made the final error of the set that led to a 25-23 Highlander victory.

SET TWO
The roles were reversed in the second set as Radford took a 9-4 lead which increased into a seven point lead. The Highlanders were not done extending their lead as a kill by Gonzalez and a bad set by Claire Ochs gave Radford its biggest lead of the set. They cruised to a 25-17 second set victory.

SET THREE
It was all Highlanders in set number three. Radford jumped out to a 10-2 lead and didn't look back en route to a 25-11 match-clinching victory. Radford hit .469 as a team, tallied three service aces and posted a set-best 15 kills.

TURNING POINT
The final four Highlander points came off Southeast Missouri turnovers. The Redhawks could not overcome the adversity and Radford outscored them 16-6 through the first 10 points of the second and third set.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Radford tallied 42 kills in the match, which is the most in a three set match this season.

UP NEXT
Radford will face ULM, who lost to Southeast Missouri on Friday, in the final match of the Redhawks Invitational on Saturday. First serve is set for noon.
