MEN'S SOCCER EXPLODES FOR FOUR GOALS IN WIN AT WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Radford men's soccer team exorcised its demons and came alive for the first time this season, scoring four goals to secure a 4-1 win over West Virginia at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Highlanders (1-5-0) came out hungry for a win and ready to play from the opening whistle. They earned an early chance in the 4th minute when Amadou Macky Diop found Nick Mayhugh in the box for a point blank header that was saved. Four minutes later, Gonzalo Rodriguez sent a dangerous corner kick just in front of goal, but that too was blocked just in time and sent away.

It was before the clock struck 10 minutes, however, when Radford would find the back of the net. Senior midfielder Victor Valls fired one shot that was blocked before he collected the rebound and hit a low, curling strike into the bottom right of the goal to put his team ahead, 1-0.

Radford then doubled its lead in the 17th minute. After a forced turnover, Diop turned and played a ball between the defense for senior Kieran Roberts who calmly shot up and over the keeper. Another goal in the 36th minute – this time off the foot of Diop – gave the Highlanders a 3-0 lead before halftime.

For good measure, Diop scored his second goal of the night in the 56th minute. After one of his teammates was fouled just outside the 18-yard box, the Dakar, Senegal native rolled a low shot around the leaping wall of defenders and into the net. West Virginia (5-4-0) answered soon after in the 57th minute with a header, but it was too little, too late.

Freshman goalkeeper Sam Farrell made his first collegiate start and he came up big with three saves including a penalty kick save in the 70th minute. He analyzed the Mountaineer PK taker perfectly and dove to his right before getting a hand on the ball and knocking it away. The Highlanders' defense stayed strong and saw the game out from there.

STAT OF THE MATCH
The Highlanders exploded for 18 shots including nine on goal Tuesday night. Diop led the way with six shots, Roberts followed with five and Mayhugh notched three of his own. The stat is even more impressive considering Radford had only tallied 46 shots (19 on goal) through five games this season coming into the night.
