HIGHLANDERS FALL ON THE ROAD AT HAMPTON DESPITE NUNLEY'S FIFTH STRAIGHT DOUBLE-DOUBLE



Hampton, Va. - The Radford women's basketball team suffered their first Big South Conference defeat of the season as they fell to the Hampton Pirates, 68-54, on Thursday evening at the Hampton Convocation Center. The Highlanders fell to 8-6 (2-1) while the Pirates improved to 7-7 (3-0).
 
Redshirt junior center Sydney Nunley posted her fifth straight double-double as she matched her career-high with 22 points and pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds. Senior guard/forward Destinee Walker and junior guard Khiana Johnson (3 steals) were also in double-figures with 10 points each. 
 
Hampton hit 29-of-53 field goal attempts for a 54.7 percent clip, including 6-of-15 (40 percent) from behind the arc while the Highlanders were just 20-for-62 (32.3 percent) overall. Radford also misfired on 17-of-22 attempts from 3-point territory for a 22.7 percent clip.
 
Pirates' sophomore guard Mahaley Holit scored a game-high 32 points on 13-of-19 shooting and added nine boards and nine assists in 40 minutes. Senior forward Kaylah Lupoe contributed 20 points and seven rebounds.

The hosts jumped out to a 13-5 advantage at the 6:35 mark but Radford went on a 9-2 run to inch within 15-14 with 4:06 left. Nunely capped the spurt with a put-back bucket.  
 
Freshman guard Makaila Wilson swished a triple to even the game at 19-19 with 1:35 left and Walker provided the Highlanders with their first lead, 21-19, after converting a layup.  Guard Laren Vanarsdale connected from long-distance to give the Pirates a 22-21 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
Both teams struggled from the field in the second stanza as the hosts outscored Radford by a 9-7 margin to take a 31-28 halftime edge.
 
Hampton took control of the contest in the third quarter as they opened the stanza on a 7-2 run to grab a 38-30 advantage at the 5:52 mark.  The Pirates extended their lead to as many as 15 points before settling for a 47-34 lead entering the final quarter.
 
The Pirates continued to widen their lead in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Highlanders by a 13-4 count to grab a 60-38 lead with just 5:34 remaining in the contest.
 
Radford was never able to recover although they did manage to score 16 points the rest of the way.

Radford will return home to face Winthrop on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
