HIGHLANDERS FALL ON ROAD AGAINST HOT-SHOOTING MOUNT ST. MARY'S; WALKER JOINS 1,000 POINT CLUB



Emmitsburg, MD - - -The Radford women's basketball team completed the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 89-77 defeat at the hands of the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers on Wednesday evening at Knott Arena.  The Highlanders fell to 6-5 while the Mount improved to 6-5.

Senior guard/forward Destinee Walker (8 rebounds, 3 steals) became the 24th Highlander in program history to score 1,000 points when she drilled a left-corner trey with 1:35 remaining in the opening quarter.  Junior center Sydney Nunley recorded her second consecutive double-double with 22 points (career-high) and added 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks.  Junior guard Khiana Johnson (13 points) and junior forward Lydia Rivers (10 points) were also in double-figures.

The Highlanders got off to a great start as they led by an 18-10 margin after the opening quarter. The visitors went 8-for-14 from the floor and held the Mount to just 3-of-12 shooting. The quarter included two milestones as Rivers scored her 500thcareer point at the 5:15 mark and Walker went over a grand just minutes later.
 
Mount St. Mary's closed to within 23-22 with 5:31 remaining before halftime but Nunley scored six straight points to give Radford a 29-22 advantage with 4:25 left. 
 
Triples by Johnson, Walker and freshman guard Makaila Wilson down the stretch spotted the Highlanders a 40-30 lead at intermission.
 
Radford took their largest lead of the game when Walker splashed her third trifecta to make it 43-30 with 9:35 left in the third quarter.
 
Mount St. Mary's recovered quickly as they answered with an 11-1 run to close within 44-41 at the 6:29 mark. Guard Juliette Lawless scored seven of her 21 points during the stretch for the Mountaineers.
 
The Highlanders were able to stop the bleeding and took a 49-44 lead after Wilson hit a 3-pointer at the 5:25 mark. The Mount, however, scored eight straight points to take their first lead of the game at 52-49 with 3:36 remaining. guard Daly Sullivan (game-high 23 points) drained consecutive treys to cap the spurt. 
 
Walker gave Radford a 58-57 advantage after she swished a long-range bomb with fifty-four seconds left but guard Brdiget Birkhead answered with a trey to give her team a 60-58 lead after three quarters.
 
The Highlanders took their final lead with 9:30 remaining in the contest as sophomore guard Tina Lindenfeld stuck a right-corner trifecta to make it 61-60.
 
The game was tied for the fifth and final time, 65-65, when Nunley converted inside after grabbing an offensive board with 8:02 left.
 
The hosts scored eight straight points to establish a 73-65 lead with 5:31 on the clock as guard Michaela Harrison capped the stretch with a 3-pointer.
 
Radford managed to close within 76-71 after a free throw by Rivers at the 3:19 mark but were unable to close the gap after that.
 
Mount went 7-of-8 from the charity-stripe to put the game away down the stretch.

The Mountaineers went 13-of-26 from long-range in the contest and were 30-for-62 (48.2 percent) overall. Radford shot 43.1 percent overall (28-of-65) and went 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) from long-distance.

Radford will open the Big South slate with a home contest against UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
