Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WOMEN'S HOOPS MAKES IT FIVE STRAIGHT! JOHNSON POURS IN CAREER-HIGH 19 POINTS

Buies Creek, N.C.  - - -The Radford women's basketball team won their fifth straight Big South Conference contest as they edged Campbell, 56-52, at Gore Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders, who have won eight straight in the series, improved to 13-6 (7-1 BSC) while the Camels dropped to 11-8 (3-5 BSC).

Junior Khiana Johnson, who played all 40 minutes, scored a career-high 19 points and added a season-best six rebounds along with four assists. Senior Destinee Walker contributed 11 points and redshirt junior Sydney Nunley grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. Nunley has now reached double-figures in rebounds in 10 straight contests.

"That was the game we kind of expected today," said Highlander head coach Mike McGuire. "Both teams really pride themselves on defense. I thought Campbell was the aggressor in the first half and they had more punch and pace to what they were doing. We really had to shore some things up at halftime. I thought the toughness with our ball-screen defense really got us back in the game and gave us an advantage. A lot of the discussion at halftime was about playing tougher than them and I thought we did that in the second half."

The Highlanders trailed 18-11 after the opening quarter as guard Lauren Carter scored six points to pace the Camels. Johnson scored nine of the Highlanders' points in the frame to keep Radford within striking distance.

Campbell scored the opening bucket of the second quarter to take a 20-11 advantage, but the visitors answered with an 11-4 spurt to inch within 24-22 at the 5:36 mark.  Walker ignited the stretch with a layup and also sprinkled in a pair of free throws, and sophomore guard Tina Lindenfeld capped the run with a trifecta from the top of the key.

The hosts were able to hold off the Highlanders, temporarily, as they re-claimed a 28-22 advantage after a 3-pointer by Shyanne Tuelle.

A layup by Nunley followed by two free throws by Walker trimmed the deficit to 29-28 at the 1:36 mark. Carter then converted a layup to give the Camels a 31-28 halftime lead.

Radford tied the game for the first time at 32-32 after Johnson drilled a jumper with 7:51 remaining in the third quarter. Lindenfeld then gave the Highlanders the lead for good after splashing a triple on the next possession.

The Camels closed to within 38-36 at the 6:08 mark after a layup by Kyra Davis, however, Walker hit Lindenfeld with a gorgeous pass for a fast-break layup and redshirt junior guard Jen Falconer followed with a 3-pointer to widen the lead to 43-36 with 4:10 left.

The Highlanders settled for a 44-38 lead at the end of the third stanza.

Radford led by as many as eight points on two occasions in the final quarter, the final one coming at 48-40 with 8:51 left after a layup by Johnson.

The hosts refused to go away and managed to score six straight points to close within 48-46 after a trey by Hayley Barber at the 4:52 mark.

However, the visitors answered three times down the stretch after the Camels were within just two points. Falconer, Nunley and Johnson all converted big buckets to keep Radford out in front.

Johnson then made two free throws with 26 ticks left to give the Highlanders a 56-50 advantage, essentially putting the game out of reach.

In a match-up of the top-two defensive teams in the conference, Radford held the Camels to 19-of-62 shooting (30.6 percent) and forced them to misfire on 13-of-17 3-pointers (23.5 percent).

Radford will travel to USC-Upstate on Saturday afternoon.
