MULTIPLE HIGHLANDERS NOTCH BIG VICTORIES AT ITA REGIONALS

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Radford travelled to the ITA Atlantic Regionals with multiple Highlanders picking up victories in the singles and doubles matches spanning from Thursday, October 17th through Saturday, October 19th.

THURSDAY
The Highlanders kicked off singles play in the main draw with a victory as Yevhen Sirous defeated Mount St. Mary's 6-1, 6-1. Andres Silva and Matko Varga also competed in the early-morning matches against George Washington and Navy, dropping both matches. Freshman Demi Taramonlis started the tournament on a bye but would pick up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mount St. Mary's in the second round. Sirous continued his hot singles play with another big victory over Penn State 6-2, 6-2.

In the consolation bracket the Highlanders would win all four of their matches. Silva rebounded from his first-round loss with a dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory over Morgan State. Will Crane also came up big with a 6-2, 6-4 win over St. Joseph. Matko Varga picked up one of the bigger wins of the day taking down Georgetown 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(7). To finalize the quartet of victories and close out singles for the day, Karl Katlaps took down fellow Big South foe Hampton 4-6, 6-2, 14-12.

FRIDAY
The Highlanders started out singles play Friday morning with a tough battle for Sirous against a seeded Old Dominion player. Sirous wound up dropping the match in a close three-set fashion 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Also, in the third round of the main draw was Taramonlis taking on a fellow Greek from Penn State but would fall 6-1, 6-0. With the losses that would end singles play for the Highlanders in the ITA Regionals.

Radford finally started doubles play Friday afternoon, with Taramonlis and Silva kicking things off with a comeback win against Longwood 9-7 after trailing 2-5. Rodrigo Magalhaes and Yevhen Sirous also squared off against Longwood also winning 9-7. The last doubles pair to take the court for Radford, Karl Katlaps and William Crane, also won their opening draw 9-7 against Morgan State. Taramonlis would continue play into the second round strong coming up just short against the number two seed Penn State 8-4. Meanwhile Magalhaes and Sirous took a dominant 8-2 victory over Duquesne. To finish the day in consolation doubles bracket, Katlaps and Crane took a 9-7 victory over Howard.

SATURDAY
Magalhaes and Sirous were the last Highlandes standing in the tournament in the main doubles draw bracket, taking on the number 1 seed in the tournament (and ranked 47th in the nation) from Old Dominion. The duo played a back and forth match tying each other up on multiple occasions, but Old Dominion pulled out the win late 8-5 concluding Radford's run at the ITA Regionals.

UP NEXT
Radford will regroup and prepare for the Big South Fall Invitational hosted by Presbyterian running from Friday, October 25th through Sunday, October 27th.
