ROCK HILL, S.C. – A penalty kick in the final minute of regulation and a golden goal seven minutes later gave Winthrop a 2-1 overtime win over the Radford men's soccer team on Sunday evening at Eagle Field.
The Highlanders took an early lead just five minutes into the contest, as
Baye Djibril Faye scored his second goal of the season, beating Winthrop goalkeeper Sam Jones to give Radford an early 1-0 advantage.
Radford continued to put pressure on Winthrop early in the contest, taking five of the six shots in the opening 45 minutes. Faye's early goal was the lone tally of the half, as the Highlanders took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Winthrop upped the pressure in the second half and, after having multiple attempts stopped by Radford goalkeeper
Joseba Incera, finally broke through for the equalizer in the last minute of play. The Highlanders were whistled for a handball in the box, which set up a penalty kick for the Eagles that was converted for the game-tying goal. The play also forced the Highlanders down to 10 men for overtime, after
Octavio Ocampo was sent off for the infraction.
The home side needed just seven minutes of the overtime session to close out the match. Playing a man up, Winthrop continued to push the tempo and scored the match-winner on a 25-yard strike into the top right corner.

Faye has now scored in back-to-back matches for the Highlanders, while Ocampo picked up his third assist of the season and now leads the team with nine points (three goals, three assists).
