RADFORD DEFENDS HOME TURF, DOWNS GARDNER-WEBB

RADFORD, Va. – A heavy offensive possession by the Radford women's soccer team led to a pair of goals against Gardner-Webb in a 2-0 win on Wednesday night.

It was the final home match of the 2019 regular season and the Highlanders didn't disappoint. The fireworks began early as Radford took a 1-0 lead in the first six minutes of the match.

Mia Wood stole the ball from a Runnin' Bulldog midfielder and found an open Brianna Oliver, who played a perfect through ball to Nelia Perez. The senior took a couple of dribbles and fired the ball into the back of the net from the top of the 18-yard box.

That was the first of 11 shots in the first half for Radford. The second half saw as many shots and just as many goals as the first. Only the script was flipped for Perez and Oliver. Perez was dribbling into the 18-yard box when two GWU defenders pursued her. She saw an open Oliver in the middle of the field and passed the ball to her.

As soon as Oliver received the pass two more defenders tried to take the ball away. The junior transfer made a move past both defenders and fired a shot with her left foot that the goalkeeper had no chance to save. The 59th minute score gave Radford a 2-0 lead.

The Highlanders kept the offensive pursuit and had multiple good looks at the goal. Katelyn Kellogg, the Runnin' Bulldogs goalkeeper, made great plays to keep the deficit close. She ended the match with nine saves.

Courtenay Kaplan, Lexi Dean and the Highlander back line tallied another home shutout. It was the seventh home victory this season and sixth shutout inside Cupp Stadium.

Gabi Paupst led the way with seven shots, while Perez tallied six. Oliver added four and Lily McLane took three. Paupst, Perez and Oliver recorded 10 shots on goal.

STAT OF THE MATCH
With Perez's goal, she now leads the team with nine and 21 points. It was her fourth game-winning goal, which also is a team-high.
