RADFORD SWEEPS DOUBLES COMPETITION AT BIG SOUTH INVITATIONAL

CLINTON, S.C. – A doubles finals match featuring two Radford pairs highlighted a strong showing against Big South competition for the Highlanders at the Big South Invite which took place over the last weekend.

FRIDAY
Before singles play started Friday morning, Demi Taramonlis and Andres Silva where the lone Radford representatives to participate in doubles play with a dominant 8-2 win over UNC Asheville. Yevhen Sirous and Rodrigo Magalhaes, as the two seed, had a first-round bye and didn't compete.

Next up was singles play for the Highlanders, as Silva took down USC Upstate's best in an epic comeback 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 to set the tone for Radford. The freshman Taramonlis followed it up by creating a comeback of his own with a win over Longwood 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. Sirous and Magalhaes would drop their early singles matches, while Silva would end up being knocked out in the second round by Campbell in the final singles match of the day.

SATURDAY
Two doubles teams took the court in the second round to kick off Saturday's matches. Sirous and Magalhaes were dominant in an 8-2 victory, while Taramonlis and Silva cruised to a win of their own over Campbell (the four seed in doubles play) 8-6. This set up a semifinal full of Highlanders, with two of the four final teams remaining hailing from Radford.

Up first it was the young duo of Taramonlis and Silva who shined as they picked up the upset victory over the one seed Longwood 8-6, sealing a spot in the championship. On the other semifinal court, Sirous and Magalhaes took on Presbyterian in a tightly contested match that Radford came up clutch late and took 8-7(5). With both pairs of Highlanders being victorious, it set up an all-Radford final for Sunday morning.

After their big doubles match, Sirous and Magalhaes moved their focus to the singles consolation bracket. Sirous quickly took care of business with quick wins of 7-6(4), 6-0 over Presbyterian and 6-1, 6-1 over Hampton, while Magalhaes fell in a close match against UNC Asheville 6-7, 6-4, 10-2. Because Magalhaes was slated to play again against Presbyterian but he couldn't continue so Silva took over and quickly won 6-2, 6-4 to help the Highlanders finish with seven wins on the day.

SUNDAY
Sirous would finish up singles play for the Highlanders, taking on UNC Asheville in the consolation bracket semifinal and winning swiftly 6-2, 6-2 for a spot in the consolation championship. Singles play came to an end for the Highlanders as Sirous would end up falling in the finals 6-7, 6-4, 10-5 to Gardner-Webb.

To finish the great weekend for Radford, Taramonlis and Silva teamed up to face their teammates Sirous and Magalhaes in the doubles bracket final, with the young blood of Taramonlis and Silva would end up taking the title in an 8-1 victory.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will head to Winston-Salem N.C. in two weeks to finish off their fall tournament schedule at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
