RADFORD SHUTS OUT UNC ASHEVILLE ON SENIOR NIGHT

RADFORD, Va. – Six seniors played their final regular season weekend match inside Cupp Stadium on Saturday night for the Radford women's soccer team and ended Senior Night with a 1-0 victory over UNC Asheville.

Radford took 14 shots in the match – seven each half – and one was bound to find the back of the net. It did just three minutes into the second half. Lily McLane took a corner kick that went over the herd of players inside the box. It found its way to Reese Degnan, who was in the top left corner of the eight-yard box. She fired a shot to the right side of the goal, it hit the post and bounced left into the net.

The 48th minute goal was the first for Degnan this season and would be the game-winner thanks to a stifling defense and great goalkeeping by Courtenay Kaplan. UNC Asheville was held to only six shots and just two in the second half. Two underclassmen played a big role in the shutout as sophomore Kayla Thomas and freshman Mia Wood competed a full 90 minutes and buzzed around the field all night.

The Highlanders had a few chances in the first half firing a few shots early. Three different seniors took shots in the first eight minutes of the match but none were on frame. Four more Highlanders took shots and none of the seven in the first half were on goal. That changed in the second half.

Five of Radford's shots landed on frame, including four in the final 25 minutes. Nelia Perez led the way with five shots. Fellow seniors Abby Hurst and Emily Dunn combined for three shots as Hurst fired two and Dunn took one. The senior class tallied nine of the Highlander's 14 shots.

STAT OF THE MATCH
All six seniors earned a start and each saw quality minutes. Kaplan led the way with 90 in goal, while Perez was right behind her with 72. Dunn tallied 71 and Hurst added 56. Natacha Rangel-Ribiero played 50 and Nicole Ray rounded out the class with 44.

POST OF THE MATCH

QUOTABLE
"I thought we played well tonight," Ben Sohrabi said. "It was really great to see our seniors get a win on Senior Night and all six of our seniors played well tonight. It's always nice when our defense gets a shutout. In these conference games, finding ways to win is big and we did that. Now we'll shift our focus to the next match on Wednesday."

UP NEXT
Radford will play four of its final six regular season matches on the road. The next will be on Wednesday night in Spartanburg, S.C., against USC Upstate at 7 p.m.
