Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

RADFORD HANDLES RICHMOND BEHIND CLE’VON GREENE’S CAREER NIGHT

WASHINGTON, D.C. – An 8-0 run in the first half gave the Radford men's basketball team a 21-13 lead and they never looked back en route to a 73-58 rout of Richmond on Sunday at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington D.C.

With the game tied at 13 midway through the first half, Cle'von Greene and Travis Fields, Jr., knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers that put Radford up by six. Moments later, Chyree Walker knocked down a jump shot to complete an 8-0 run and put the Highlanders ahead with 6:32 to play in the first half. The Highlanders never lost the lead for the remainder of the game and had a lead for 34 of the 40 minutes played.

Greene was red hot from all over the floor on Sunday tallying an efficient career-high 19 points. He went 6-for-7 from the floor and was perfect from long range knocking down a career-best four 3-pointers. He only missed one shot from the charity stripe hitting 3-of-4.

His performance, along with Carlik Jones and Devonnte Holland's, played an important role in the victory. Jones picked up his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 assists. His 11 assists tied a career-high and were four shy of tying a Radford single-game record. Holland was a force on the glass against the Spiders. He tallied a career-high 13 rebounds and was two points shy of a double-double.

Richmond (10-2) cut the Highlander lead to three, 24-21, with a little over four minutes to play in the first half until Jones and Fields Jr., quickly extended the lead back to eight with a 3-pointer and layup. The Spiders answered with a 3-pointer of their own and Devine Eke scored the final basket of the first half giving the Highlanders a seven-point lead at the break.

Having notable wins on the schedule and receiving votes in multiple national Top 25 polls, the Highlanders knew the Spiders wouldn't back down. That didn't stop Radford. The Highlanders came out and quickly took a commanding 10-point advantage just two and a half minutes into the second half. Radford has not lost a game all season when it has led by 10 or more.

The Spiders got within seven points three different times in the second half and the most recent came at the 12:05 mark after Jacob Gilyard made a layup. Three seniors answered as Fields Jr., Holland and Donald Hicks combined for six straight points, giving Radford a 48-35 lead, its largest at the time with 10:53 to play.

As one final chance to get within striking distance, Richmond started to foul with 2:05 remaining in the game and the Highlanders hit their free throws down the stretch. After being sent to the foul line 14 times inside the final 2:05, the Highlanders only missed two (12-for-14) during the span. Radford shot 86.4 percent from the charity stripe in the second half and recorded an 82.6 percentage for the game.

Richmond couldn't connect on its three final shots and Radford closed out the game on a 6-0 run to claim its largest lead of the game (15 points) when the final horn blew.

TWEET OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"Our guys played some unbelievable basketball from the opening tip to the end of the game," Mike Jones said. "Richmond has such a hard system to guard and I thought our guys focused and payed a lot of attention to detail. When you hold a team that averages close to 80 points a game, to just 58, you're chances are good."

UP NEXT
Radford will return to the Dedmon Center after Christmas and host Central Penn on Sunday, Dec. 29. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
