HIGHLANDERS TOP UNCW AND RHODE ISLAND ON OPENING DAY

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Radford softball team scored 12 runs on 22 hits en route to a 5-2 victory over UNCW and a 7-1 win over Rhode Island in the Fairfield Inn & Suites Seahawk Softball Bash on Friday night.

Destiny Freeman stole the show in the debut as going 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Talia Douglas also had a 3-for-3 game in the nightcap with two RBIs and two runs scored.

GAME ONE
It only took two innings for the Highlanders to pick up their first home run of the season and it came off the bat of a true freshman in her first plate appearance. Following a Hannah Medlam hit, Freeman stepped in and delivered a two-run shot on the first pitch she saw.

The Highlanders increased their lead to 3-0 when transfer Sydney Fisher drove in Lauren Maddrey on a fielder's choice. The Seahawks answered with a sacrifice fly from Rachel Willis cutting the lead to 3-1.

Radford added two more runs in the sixth that created a 5-1 lead and UNCW put up a fight in the bottom of the sixth, but Kayla Huffman left a pair of runners on base with a 5-2 score.

Huffman (1-0) was on fire in her final collegiate debut. She had eight strikeouts, walked one and allowed two earned runs.
