MILLER MAKES HISTORY, RADFORD TAKES FIFTH AT 2019 BIG SOUTH INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Radford Track & Field team completed the 2019 Big South Indoor Championships with five podium finishes to earn 52 points and a fifth-place finish at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex this weekend.
 
The Highlanders' squad boasts tons of young talent and now they have secured back-to-back top-5 finishes in the conference championships.
 
Freshman Emilie Miller concluded her indoor season in style, setting a new program record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds. The time bests Amber Church's previous record of 8.66 seconds from the 2011 Big South Championships. Miller placed second in the finals to take home a silver medal as well.
 
La'Tisha Chambers and Chancey Gunnell took home bronze medals in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes respectively. Chambers set a PR with a time of 24.61 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in program history, while Gunnell blazed past the competition for a PR of 57.38 seconds in her race.
 
Kayland Bond continued her stellar debut season with a fifth-place finish in the mile run. She completed the race in 5:17.13 to pick up four more points for the Highlanders. Then in the 3,000 meters later in the day, the Vinton, Va. native posted an eleven-second PR of
 
To wrap up the track events, Karah Foster, Chambers, Ryan Paine and Gunnell combined to run a 3:54.52 in the 4x400-meter relay. The time was the second-fastest time for the Highlanders all season and was good enough to take fourth place on the day.
 
Over in the weight throw, both Madison Graham and Mary Brown walked away with personal records. Graham reached a distance of 13.56 meters (44'6") and Brown's mark stood at 13.00 meters (42'8").
 
CHAMBERS NAMED TO ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
Junior La'Tisha Chambers was named to the 2019 Big South Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team during the post-meet award ceremony on Saturday. The Convington, Va. native owns a 3.75 grade point average with a major in Recreational Therapy and a minor in psychology. She was also named to the 2018 Big South Outdoor All-Academic Team last season.

After a month off from traveling to meets, the Highlanders will kick off their 2019 outdoor season with the 49ers Classic on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16. The meet will be held at the Irwin Belk Track & Field center in Charlotte, N.C.
