HIGHLANDERS EDGED BY NO. 11 RANKED EAST CAROLINA; DUNN IMPRESSIVE IN FIRST CAREER START

Box Score

Greenville, NC
. - - -The Radford baseball team gave No. 11 ranked East Carolina all that they could handle but fell to the Pirates, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Clark-Leclair Stadium in the series finale.

Freshman righthander Cole Dunn tossed five impressive innings in his Highlander debut, allowing just one earned run on four hits while walking two and fanning one batter. Freshman second baseman David Bryant had a pair of hits and scored a run while designated hitter Jimmy Goldsmith collected his first career hit and RBI.

The Highlanders scored two runs in the top of the second inning to get on the scoreboard first. First baseman J.D. Mundy ripped his first extra-base hit as a Highlander as he doubled deep to centerfield. Catcher Straton Podaras followed with a hit by pitch, setting up a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by shortstop Colby Higgerson to advance the runners over to second and third.  Mundy then scored on a wild pitch and Jimmy Goldsmith produced an RBI groundout to plate Podaras.

Radford (0-3) scored another run in the third but had a golden opportunity for a bigger inning. Second baseman David Bryant opened the frame with an infield single and advanced to third after center fielder Kyle Butler singled to left. Butler advanced to second on the throw by ECU outfielder Dusty Baker. Highlander left fielder Spencer Horwitz then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs, setting the scene for Andrew Szamski. The left fielder then hit into a 6-4-3 double play to plate Bryant with Radford's final run of the contest as Mundy grounded out to first to end the frame.

The Pirates (3-0) scored their lone run off Dunn in the bottom of the fourth.  Dunn retired the lead-off batter but then walked first baseman Spencer Brickhouse. Dunn tried to pickoff Brickhouse, however, his throw bounced past Mundy and Brickhouse scampered all the way to third. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Jake Washer.

Dunn got some defensive help in his final frame as Higgerson made a diving catch in foul territory and Podaras later gunned down a Pirate on a stolen base attempt.

Cody Boone relieved Dunn in the bottom of the sixth and East Carolina scored two runs in the frame to even the game. Boone allowed two singles and hit a batter as he faced four Pirates. After ECU scored a run on a fielder choice, Cameron Fritz replaced Boone and eventually allowed an RBI groundout. He was able to get out of the inning without further damage by fanning shortstop Turner Brown with runners on second and third.

The Pirates scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh as Washer singled though the left side with two outs.

Freshman Derek Domecq gave the Highlanders a chance in the ninth as he threw a scoreless eighth inning in his debut.

Radford had an opportunity to get even in their final at bat but were unable to come up with the big hit after Higgerson (infield single) and designated hitter Garrett Matheny (walk) reached with one out.  But pinch hitter Matt Roth struck out looking and Bryant flied out to center to end the game.

The Highlanders will take on VCU on Friday afternoon in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
