HIGHLANDERS OVERWHELM BUCKNELL, 9-1, RECORD FIRST WIN OF 2019

Spartanburg, SC- - -It took five hours and thirty-four minutes, but the Radford baseball team won their first game of the 2019 campaign, defeating the Bucknell Bison by a score of 9-1, Saturday afternoon at rain-soaked King Field.

Redshirt senior right fielder Andrew Szamski went 3-for-4 with an RBI and junior catcher Straton Podaras bashed a homer and drove in three runs to lead the Highlander attack.

Senior left-hander Zack Ridgely won his first game of the season as he tossed four scoreless innings, scattering five hits while walking one and striking out a pair of Bison. Ridgely threw 72 pitches before the rain caused a long delay.

Radford (1-3) pushed across three runs in the bottom of the first inning as they were aided by three walks, an error and a hit by pitch. First baseman J.D. Mundy brought home the first run as he drew a bases-loaded walk to score center fielder Kyle Butler, who opened the frame with the only hit of the inning. Catcher Straton Podaras followed with an RBI sacrifice fly and shortstop Colby Higgerson added an RBI sacrifice bunt.

Podaras made it 5-0 in the bottom of the third as he cranked a two-run bomb to left, which scored Mundy (walk).

The Highlanders busted the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning as they were able to score three more runs on just one hit for the second time in the contest. DH Garrett Matheny was hit by a pitch to open the frame and then second baseman David Bryant, Butler and first baseman Spencer Horwitz (RBI) drew back-to-back-to-back free passes off reliever Austin Odell. Szamski made Odell pay by greeting him with an RBI single and then Mundy reached on a fielders choice, which scored Butler to extend the lead to 8-0.

Following a long rain delay, Cody Boone came on to pitch the fifth inning and did not allow a run.

Bryant made it 9-0 after he singled up the middle in the bottom of the fifth inning, which brought home Higgerson with an unearned run.

The Bison finally got on the board in the top of the eighth inning on a steal of home.

Radford and Bucknell will battle again on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Wofford.  The Highlanders will also take on Wofford at 5:00 p.m.
