RADFORD PUTS ON OFFENSIVE SHOWCASE IN WIN OVER HOWARD

WILMINGTON, N.C.Hannah Medlam tallied three of Radford's 13 hits in a 15-4 win over Howard that capped off the Fairfield Inn & Suites Seahawk Softball Bash on Sunday morning.

Medlam went 3-for-4 with a triple and a pair of RBIs, but Brooke Bond and Sofia Tapia stole the show driving in a combined seven runs. Bond delivered a two-run home run and a two-run double, while Tapia plated one run with a squeeze bunt and two more on a double to left field.

Radford (4-1) struck early when the top two hitters in the lineup, Tapia and Sydney Fisher scored in the second inning. The couple of runs gave Radford a 2-0 lead.

Howard scored an unearned run in the second inning and the Highlanders answered with a run of their own in the top of the third.

The Bison cut the deficit to one in the third inning as a run scored on a ground out to second base. On the ensuing at-bat, Xzarria Simmons singled up the middle and tied the contest at three.

In the top of the fourth, Brooke Bond pinch hit for Hunter Mundy and delivered her second home run of the season with a runner on base. The freshman gave the Highlanders a 5-3 lead. Two batters later Tapia picked up her first RBI of the game on a sacrifice bunt that put Radford up 6-3.

Howard added another run in the fourth inning and cut the Radford lead to two, 6-4. That's all the offense the Bison could muster up for the rest of the game as the Highlanders went on to score nine more runs including an eight run sixth inning. The big inning gave Radford a 15-4 lead, and put the eight run rule into effect.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Highlanders scored double-digit runs for the second time this season. Radford outscored the Bison 31-7 in two games.

POST OF THE GAME

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Along with Tapia, Bond and Medlam, Fisher and Maggie Rowe each had two hit performances. Fisher scored three times and had one RBI, while Rowe added two RBIs. Talia Douglas and Destiny Freeman also had one hit each. In the circle, Sarah Smith picked up her first strikeout – three total – and first win as a Highlander. She only allowed five hits and one earned run. Hannah Morris made an appearance in the circle pitching 2.2 innings of no hit softball and added her first collegiate punch out.

QUOTABLE

"Overall I am happy with where our team is coming out of the gates" Creasy said. "Anytime you can start the season out 4-1 it's a good thing. We need some more defensive reps and fine tune some things, but errors and mental miscues tend to happen on opening weekend. Our offensive mentality at the plate and aggressiveness on the bases put us in a lot of good positions this weekend. It was also good to see our newbies come out on fire the way they did. Now it's time to turn our focus to the competition on Thursday in Charleston."

UP NEXT
Radford plays an unusual Thursday evening game as it travels to Charleston, S.C., for a meeting with College of Charleston at 6 p.m., in the Holy City Showdown.
