RADFORD DROPS PAIR OF CONTESTS ON DAY TWO OF HOLY CITY SHOWDOWN

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday to UMass Lowell and Iowa State, both by 2-1 scores, in the second day of the Holy City Showdown.

Despite the Highlanders' (5-3) tame bats in the doubleheader, a pair of pitchers had good outings. Jessie Marvin had a no-hitter going through 4.1 innings and only allowed two runs – both unearned – on four hits against UMass Lowell (3-4), while Hannah Morris pitched five innings of relief work and only surrendered three hits and one walk against Iowa State (5-5).

GAME ONE vs. UMASS LOWELL
When the first pitch happened at 2:30 p.m., it seemed it had potential to be a high scoring affair as Sofia Tapia was walked on four pitches. That's all that would happen in the opening frame but in the bottom half, Marvin also walked the River Hawks first batter on four pitches.

Marvin settled in and recorded nine straight outs before allowing another leadoff walk in the fourth. After the walk, the sophomore made quick work of the UMass Lowell batters. She had a little confidence with a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by Sydney Fisher in the third inning.

Sienna Williams reached with a one-out single up the middle. Then a ground out to the pitcher moved Williams into scoring position. After that Fisher took an 0-1 pitch to right field that brought in Williams.

Marvin's first allowed hit came in the fifth inning with one out, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the frame and kept Radford's 1-0 lead. It might have been an omen for what was to come as the River Hawks tied up the game with a Courtney Cashman single up the middle in the sixth inning.

After a three up, three down inning in the top of the seventh, the River Hawks started off the bottom of the frame with a leadoff single. On the ensuing at-bat a fielder's choice and a throwing error put runners at first and second with no outs. Marvin picked up a clutch strike out, but Olivia Labbe hit a deep fly ball to center field. Tapia made the out, but the ball was deep enough to score the game-winning run.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Highlanders made three errors in the game and both River Hawk runs scored were unearned.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Radford led UMass Lowell with four hits to three and all the Highlanders hits came from four different players. Tapia had the only extra-base hit, a double in the second inning. Fisher had the lone RBI for Radford. Marvin suffered her second loss of the season, but only allowed three hits, two unearned runs and two walks.

GAME TWO vs. IOWA STATE
It was another low-scoring affair for Radford in game two of the day. Iowa State's second at bat of the game was a long ball to center field by Sydney Stites. The solo home run gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.

Radford answered in the bottom of the second when Brooke Bond led off the inning with a walk. Destiny Freeman moved Bond into scoring position with a groundout to third and Maggie Rowe's first hit of the game put runners at the corners with one out.

The Highlanders tried the suicide squeeze and it worked to perfection as Hunter Mundy reached on a fielder's choice and Bond scored. The Mundy RBI tied the game at one. That's all that Radford could get as a strike out and a ground out ended the inning.

Morris entered the game tied at one and got a 1-2-3 inning, but ran into some trouble in the fourth. She walked Mikayla Ramos to begin the inning and Kirsten Caudle reached on a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt gave Radford an out, but it also put two runners in scoring position.

On the ensuing at-bat, Mundy preserved the run as a ground ball was hit to her. She didn't hesitate and threw it right to Maggie Rowe behind the plate, who tagged out Ramos for the second out. With runners still in scoring position, Morris got Hannah Carter to fly out to Hannah Medlam in left field to end the threat.

The freshman only allowed two hits through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. As the home team for the first time this season, the Highlanders could end it with a run. Rowe, who went 3-for-3, led off the inning with a single, but three straight outs ended the scoring chance.

With Huffman – who started the game – back in the circle, Iowa State placed a runner on second via the international tiebreaker rule and played small ball. A sac bunt moved the Cyclone runner to third and a ground out to second base brought her home. The run gave Iowa State a 2-1 lead and Radford couldn't push the runner placed on second base across in the bottom half of the eighth.

STAT OF THE GAME
Morris pitched a career high five innings with only three hits allowed and one walk.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Maggie Rowe had three of the five Highlander hits. Fisher and Douglas each had the other two hits. Radford didn't have an extra base hit for the first time this season.
