LACROSSE FALLS TO GEORGE WASHINGTON IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE ON SUNDAY

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Radford women's lacrosse team couldn't get its offense going in the second half and ultimately fell, 14-9, to George Washington at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex on Sunday.

Junior attacker Lindsey Carroll looked sharp, scoring a team-high three goals on four shots, all of which landed on frame. Seniors Callie Bonnel, Juliette Ruland and Adrian Rius each had two goals as well.

Bonnel filled up the stat sheet with four draw control wins, three caused turnovers and three ground balls while Ruland and sophomore Rachel Rogers led the team in ground balls with five apiece. Freshman defender Katie Bendrick was strong once again, grabbing four draw controls.

With the loss, Radford evens its ledger at 1-1 while George Washington improves to 1-2 on the year.

The Colonials struck right out of the gate, going in front 3-0 just over five minutes into the game. Carroll finally got the Highlanders on the board at the 21:03 mark, but Ioanna Mantzouratos completed her lightning-fast hat trick just 14 seconds later for GW.

Despite the early adversity, Radford found its footing and went on a 3-0 run of its own to knot things up at 4-all with 11:14 left in the first half. The script was then flipped again as George Washington scored a trio of goals to restore its 3-goal lead before Carroll found the back of the net in the final minute of the half, making it 7-5 heading into halftime.

The game had a different look in the second half as scoring became harder and harder to come by for the Highlanders. The Colonials did well to slow things down and scored three times before Radford finally got on the board again at the 16:08 mark.

That tally did ignite another 3-0 run for the visitors, but GW scored four of the final five goals in the contest to wrap things up.

BOWMAN OFF THE BENCH
Freshman goalie Maddie Bowman has come off the bench in both games to start the season now. In both the season opener and on Sunday, the Salem, Va. native made four saves so she is tied for the team lead with eight in 2019. Plus, her save percentage of .421 leads the team.

LOOKS CLEAR TO ME
Radford has been excellent in clear attempts so far this season, going 21-for-23 last week and a perfect 20-for-20 on Sunday. When combining the two, the Highlanders have been successful on 95.3% of their clear attempts.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders stay in the New River Valley to take on cross-town rival Virginia Tech next Sunday, March 3 at 3 pm.
