RADFORD ROUNDUP: FEBRUARY 26-28



RADFORD, Va. – Welcome to the Radford Roundup, where fans can find out all the information they need on upcoming Radford Athletics events taking place between Tuesday, February 26th through Thursday, February 28th.


 
  BASEBALL
 

at Virginia Tech – Tue., February 26 @ 2:30 p.m.

  • Radford returns to action after they went 2-1 in the Wofford Tournament this past weekend. The Highlanders defeated Bucknell twice and lost a 10-inning decision to the host Terriers on Sunday evening.
  • Senior right fielder Andrew Szamski went 6-for-10 with two homers, 6 RBI's and six runs scored over the weekend. Szamski went 3-for-4 in the 9-1 win against Bucknell on Saturday afternoon. He then blasted a pair of two-run bombs in a 17-4 win against the Bison on Sunday afternoon. He also went 1-for-3 with an RBI sac fly and scored a pair of runs in the 10-9, 10-inning loss to Wofford on Sunday evening. Szamski leads the team with three homers and 8 RBI's on the season and also owns a team-high .810 slugging percentage.
  • Freshman David Bryant hit .444 (4-for-9), drove in three and scored five runs. The second baseman enjoyed a .615 on base percentage as he also drew four walks. Bryant launched his first career home run against Wofford and also had an RBI double and went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in Sunday's 17-4 victory against Bucknell. He leads the team with a .421 batting average through six contests and also owns a team-high .542 on base percentage.
  • Virginia Tech has jumped out to a 5-0 start with wins against Stetson, Manhattan, Sam Houston State, East Tennessee State and UNC Greensboro.
  • Catcher Carson Taylor is hitting a team-high .526 and has already scored nine runs.
  • Catcher Luke Horanski has a pair of homers and 10 RBI's to pace the squad.
  • Lefty Ian Seymour is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in 10.0 innings of work.

  MEN'S TENNIS
 

vs. Mount St. Mary's – Tues., February 26 @ 2 p.m.

  • Michiel Meekers and Matko Varga are still unbeaten in singles competition this season after both grabbed victories against Duquesne last weekend. 
  • The Highlanders are 4-1 in non-conference play this season, boasting a pure 2-0 home record as well with wins against North Carolina A&T and Bluefield. 
  • Varga and Andres Silva stayed unbeaten in doubles with a win (6-2) against Duquesne last weekend. 
  • The Highlanders are looking to get off to their first 6-1 start since the 2011-12 season. 
 
  WOMEN'S TENNIS
 

vs. Mount St. Mary's – Tues., February 26 @ 2 p.m.

  • The Highlanders grabbed their second conference victory of the year in a quick 6-1 sweep at Hampton their last time out.
  • Radford has played Mount St. Mary's three times in program history going 1-2 in those matches, with their last match coming in 1998 where Radford won 5-2. 
  • Drousile Dzeubou is still on a hot streak as she's up to 6-0 in singles matches, sweeping the competition. 
  • Anastasia Belyaeva and Malin Falk are also having good seasons with 4-3 singles records, tied for second-best behind Dzeubou.

 
 SOFTBALL
 

vs. Virginia Tech – Wed., February 27 @ 6 p.m.

  • It was a tough weekend for the Radford Softball team as they went 1-4 in the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, S.C.
  • The lone win came against College of Charleston on Thursday night.
  • Following the win on Thursday night, the Highlanders have only scored two runs over the last four games.
  • Sydney Fisher and Hannah Medlam are both batting over .400 as Fisher leads the team with a .459 average and Medlam is hitting .419. The duo have combined for 30 hits, three doubles two triples and 14 RBIs.
  • The pitching staff has a pair of hurlers with a sub 2.00 ERA in Kayla Huffman (1.22) and Jessie Marvin (1.27). The two have combined to pitch 40.2 innings of the 67.2 innings this season.
  • Marvin leads the team with 19 strikeouts and Huffman is right behind her with 16.
  • The staff has given up 28 total runs, but only 16 have been earned runs.
  • Radford has outscored its opponents 23-5 in the sixth and seventh innings. In the second inning the Highlanders have outscored their competition 10-2.
  • The Hokies enter with a 12-2 record with its only two losses coming against Texas State and South Florida. 
  • Virginia Tech is batting .389 as a team, which ranks fourth in the country. Emma Strouth is batting .511 with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 18 RBIs. Darby Trull has 12 RBIs and is hitting an even .500 on the season.
  • VT is averaging 7.5 runs per game, which ranks 11th in the country and is 26th nationally with a 1.67 ERA.
