HIGHLANDERS DROP HEARTBREAKER AT VIRGINIA TECH ON A WALK-OFF HOME RUN

Blacksburg, Va. – Virginia Tech catcher Luke Horanski hit a walk-off 2-run home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Radford baseball team, on Tuesday afternoon at English Field at Union Park. The Highlanders fell to 2-5 on the season while the Hokies remained unbeaten at 7-0.

Right fielder Andrew Szamski (1-for-2, RBI) was on base four times as he drew three walks. Catcher Straton Podaras went 2-for-5 with an RBI and DH/left fielder Adam Whitacre drove in two runs and homered. Third baseman Matt Roth added a 3-run homer, his first of the season. Andrew Nardi (2.0 innings), Bruce Hudson (1 inning) and Austin Gerber (1 inning) all pitched scoreless innings in relief.

The Highlanders took the lead in the top of the ninth inning as Szamski, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, drilled a double down the left field line to score left fielder Spencer Horwitz, who had earned a one-out walk.  Radford had an opportunity to tack on some insurance runs, but Whitacre grounded out to first base to end the frame.

Radford then turned to their closer, Colby Higgerson, in the bottom of the ninth to try and shut the door on the Hokies. Higgerson fanned right fielder Kerry Carpenter on four pitches to open the inning, however, shortstop Nick Owens singled to right to set the stage for Horanski.  Horanski then deposited a 1-2 pitch to right field for the game-winner.

Radford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second as Roth slugged a 3-run bomb, scoring Higgerson and Podaras.

The hosts got two back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double and an RBI single.

Virginia Tech evened the game with one run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout to shortstop.

The Highlanders scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a pair of hits to grab a 5-3 advantage. Podaras came through with a clutch single to center scoring center fielder Kyle Butler (single). Whitacre then produced an RBI fielder's choice to score Szamski (walk).

The Hokies came right back as they answered with three runs on four hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead. Carpenter hit a two-run home run and Owens added an RBI single.

Radford tied the game at 6-6 when Whitacre launched a 3-1 pitch for his first home run of the season to lead off the top of the eighth inning.

The Highlanders will travel to UAB for a three-game series that gets underway this Friday afternoon.
