HIGHLANDERS EDGE UNC ASHEVILLE TO SET NEW PROGRAM MARK WITH TWELVE STRAIGHT VICTORIES

Asheville, N.C. - - - The Radford women's basketball team set a new program record with their twelfth consecutive victory as the Highlanders recorded a 45-44 comeback win against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Tuesday evening at Kimmel Arena.  Radford, who is now 14-1 in the Big South, improved to 20-6 overall and have reached 20 wins for the third consecutive season.

"This was just another gut check victory for our team," said Highlander head coach Mike McGuire. "This felt like a Big South Tournament game just because of the physicality and the fact that everything was contested. Credit our kids for having the fight to win the game."

"I'm really proud of this basketball team," McGuire added. "This team is just fighting and growing up together and it's a really neat thing for this group to have," he said when asked about the streak.

Redshirt-junior forward Savannah Felgemacher, who hit 7-of-11 field goal attempts, scored a game-high 14 points and added a team-high nine rebounds. Classmate Khiana Johnson scored 11 points, including nine in the second-half. Red-shirt junior forward Lydia Rivers finished with seven points and seven rebounds as she played just 21 minutes due to foul trouble.

UNC Asheville (15-12, 11-5 Big South) led for 33:51 of the contest but the Highlanders made the critical plays in crunch time.

The Bulldogs led 41-36 with 5:14 remaining after a layup by Tiffany Wilson. Destinee Walker cut the deficit to three with 4:48 left after converting two free throws. Freshman guard Makaila Wilson then came up with a steal on the ensuing possession and Walker hit two more from the line after drawing a foul.

The Bulldogs grabbed a 42-40 advantage after Wilson converted 1-of-2 from the line with 4:12 left.

Following a UNCA turnover, the Highlanders were able to knot the score as Felgemacher took a pretty feed from Rivers and finished a layup at the 2:54 mark.

Radford took their first lead since the early stages of the game at 43-42 after Rivers hit 1-of-2 from the charity-stripe with 1:24 on the clock.

The hosts came right back to re-claim the lead after Sonora Dengokl (team-high 12 points) put in a turnaround jumper to make it 44-43 with fifty-eight seconds left.

Following a Highlander timeout, Rivers drew a foul with thirty-two ticks left and calmly swished two free throws for what turned out to be the final points of the game.

The Bulldogs called a timeout and drew up a play for Nadiria Evans, who missed a layup as time expired.

Radford trailed 26-17 at halftime as they were just 7-for-28 from the floor in the stanza.  The Highlanders held the hosts to just seven field goals in the second-half and only 18 points in the stanza.

Radford went 10-for-18 from the line and the Bulldogs were just 3-for-6 from the stripe.

Radford will host USC Upstate on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Highlanders will honor Walker, Rivers, Felgemacher and Alexis Jackson prior to the game on Senior Day.
