HIGHLANDERS DEFEAT HIGH POINT IN DOUBLE OVERTIME TO REMAIN IN BIG SOUTH LEAD; REVERSE 15-POINT DEFICIT FOR EIGHTH STRAIGHT WIN

High Point, N.C. - - -The Radford women's basketball team remained in first place in the Big South Conference standings after picking up a thrilling, 84-79, victory in double-overtime against the High Point Panthers on Saturday afternoon. The win was the eighth straight for the Highlanders, who handed the hosts their first home defeat of the season. Radford improved to 16-6 overall and 10-1 in the league, which is their best conference start since the 1991-92 campaign.

"I was really proud of our fight and it was a character-building victory for us," said Radford head coach Mike McGuire. "We needed a game like this so we could see what we are made of. Something very difficult, adverse and intense in a loud environment. This can only help us. We were lucky to win this game but it was a huge step for us."

Three Highlanders produced double-doubles for the second straight contest. Junior forward Lydia Rivers led the way, matching a season-high with 17 points and equaling her career-best with 16 rebounds. It was her league-leading 10th double-double of the season. Senior guard/forward Destinee Walker (16 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists) and redshirt junior center Sydney Nunley (15 points and 11 rebounds) also registered double-doubles. Junior guard Khiana Johnson (6 assists) added 16 points and picked up her 800th career point.

Radford, who swept the season-series from the Panthers, trailed by as many as 15 points with 4:07 left in the first half and were behind by a score of 43-32 at the break.

The visitors still trailed 48-34 with 7:41 left in the third quarter, however, the Highlanders went on an 18-4 burst to tie the game with 1:43 left in the frame.  Sophomore guard Tina Lindenfeld swished a triple from the right wing to even the contest at 52-all and then gave Radford their first lead since the opening minutes of the first quarter after calmly converting two from the charity-stripe with 1:25 left.

The Highlanders fell behind again but Walker drained a jumper with thirty-seven ticks left to knot the score at 54 after three quarters.

Both teams struggled mightily from the floor in the fourth quarter as they combined to shoot 19 percent (5-of-26).

Radford took a 61-60 lead after Rivers completed an old fashioned 3-point play with 1:52 left in the contest.  However, Shea Morgan (22 points) answered with a conventional 3-point play of her own for High Point with fifty-eight second left, staking her team to a 63-61 advantage.

Walker, who played a career-high 48 minutes, then came up big as she drew a foul and made two clutch free-throws to tie the game at 63-all with forty seconds left.

Radford managed to force a turnover on the next possession, setting up on opportunity to win in regulation but Walker misfired on a jumper at the buzzer.

The Highlanders, playing in their first overtime game this season, held a 68-65 lead in the first extra session at the 2:20 mark as redshirt junior guard Jen Falconer drilled a left-corner trifecta and Nunley split on a pair of attempts from the line.

High Point's (15-7, 8-3 Big South) Emma Bockrath (12 points, 10 rebounds) followed with two free throws but Nunley scored inside to provide the guests with a 70-67 edge at the 1:36 mark.

Camryn Brown (13 points,10 assists) eventually tied the game at 70-all after connecting on a long-range bomb with just 14 seconds left.

Following a timeout, Walker missed another potential game-winner as her jumper was short at the buzzer.

Radford dominated the second overtime as they scored eight straight points after the game was even at 73-all with 3:32 remaining.

Johnson gave the Highlanders the lead for good as she hit a jumper with 3:14 left. Rivers followed with a layup, Falconer made two free throws and redshirt junior forward Savannah Felgemacher and Johnson added a free throw each to widen the lead to 81-73 with just 1:15 remaining.

High Point got a trey from Skyler Curran with 15 seconds left to cut the deficit to five but could not score again.

The contest featured eight ties and eight lead changes. Radford turned the ball over 22 times and were just 21-of-36 (58.3 percent) from the foul line but held the hosts to 31.3 percent shooting (26-of-83). The Panthers went 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) from the stripe to nearly overcome their poor outside shooting. The Highlanders went 28-of-69 (40.6 percent) from the floor, including 7-for-25 (28 percent) from behind the arc.

The Highlanders will host Longwood next Saturday afternoon.
