LONG BALL PROVES TO BE DIFFERENCE MAKER IN LOSS TO AUSTIN PEAY

CONWAY, S.C. – The Radford softball team fell to Austin Peay, 12-4, on Friday morning in Conway, S.C. The Highlanders were originally scheduled to face Coastal Carolina in the afternoon, but due to weather in the area the game was cancelled.

Austin Peay opened the game with three runs on four hits in the first inning. All three of the runs were scored via the long ball. Danielle Liermann hit the first home run of the game, a two-run shot down the left field line.

Radford broke into the hit column in the second inning when Talia Douglas singled to the shortstop with two outs, but an infield pop fly ended the inning.

The Governors added to their home run tally with a two-run shot to right center field in the third inning. The homer increased the lead to 5-0. Austin Peay added to their run total with runs in the fourth and fifth inning.

The fourth and fifth home runs of the game – all from Austin Peay – came in the sixth inning. Liermann hit her second round-tripper of the contest, another two-run home run. Carly Mattson hit a solo shot on the next at-bat and gave the Governors a 10-0 lead.

The offense began to pick up in the sixth inning for the Highlanders as Sofia Tapia touched all the bases with a leadoff home run. With a runner on first and one out, Hunter Mundy stepped in and delivered Radford's second home run of the game. The two-run long ball cut the deficit to seven runs, 10-3.

On the next at-bat Douglas took a 2-0 pitch over the left center field wall and made it a 10-4 game with only one out in the inning. The inning ended seven pitches later.

Liermann hit her third home run of the contest and it included her fifth and sixth RBIs of the day. The sixth home run by the Govs made it a 12-4 game.

Radford had a spark in the seventh inning with runners on the corners and one out, but a double play ended the game.

STAT OF THE DAY
Sydney Fisher improved her 11-game hitting streak to 12 games with a 2-for-4 performance. She and Douglas were the only Highlander with multiple hits.
