WHITACRE POWERS HIGHLANDERS TO 13-7 VICTORY AGAINST HARVARD ON SUNDAY

Radford, Va. - - -The Radford baseball team picked up a 13-7 victory against the Harvard Crimson, in the final game of their four-game set on Sunday morning at Carter Memorial Stadium.

Left fielder Adam Whitacre (2-for-3) homered and drove in five runs while shortstop Colby Higgerson and center fielder Kyle Butler also belted homers.  Second baseman David Bryant, right fielder Andrew Szamski and catcher Will Harless all produced a pair of hits.

Austin Gerber (1-1) came out of the bullpen to record the victory as the right-hander allowed just a run on two hits in 3.1 innings of work. Righty Ryan Bywaters allowed just one hit and pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to close out the contest.

The Crimson scored four times in the top of the first off Highlander starter Cole Dunn, who allowed five earned runs on six hits over 3.1 innings.  Matt Thomas hit a three-run homer to highlight the frame for the visitors.

The hosts answered with three runs in the top of the third inning to get right back into the contest.  Harless was hit by a pitch to open the inning and then Higgerson followed with a two-run bomb to center, his first of the season. Butler made it back-to-back jacks as he launched his third homer of the campaign.

Harvard (5-3) extended their lead to 6-3 with a pair of runs on two hits and an error in the fourth to chase Dunn.

Radford (4-10) got a run back in the bottom of the frame to close within two.  Harless singled in third baseman Matt Roth (3 walks), who drew a lead-off walk to open the inning.

The Highlanders broke through with a huge inning in the bottom of the fifth as they plated four runs on three hits and an error to claim an 8-6 lead.  Whitacre provided the big blow as he connected on his team-leading fourth homer with a shot to right.  Szamski produced an RBI single and Roth added a sacrifice fly for the other two runs.

Radford tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to widen their lead to 12-6.  The Highlanders drew four walks in the frame and Whitacre came through with another clutch hit, this time a two-run triple to right field.  Szamski scored on a wild pitch and Whitacre also stole home to account for the other two runs.

Harvard got one back in the top of the seventh, but Whitacre added a sacrifice fly to score Bryant for the Highlanders final run in the bottom of the eighth.
