FISHER’S HOME RUN NOT ENOUGH IN BIG SOUTH OPENER

CHARLESTON, S.C. – An early pair of runs ended up being the downfall for the Highlanders on Friday night as a fifth inning solo shot by Sydney Fisher was the only run that crossed the plate in a 2-1 loss to Charleston Southern.

The Highlanders threatened in the first inning as Fisher led off with a walk and Hannah Medlam followed up with a single. Talia Douglas got the sacrifice bunt down to put runners at second and third with just one out but a strikeout and fly out ended the threat.

Charleston Southern had a threat of its own cooked up in the bottom half of the first as the lead-off hitter singled to left field and Jade Gandara doubled. Jessie Marvin stayed poised striking out a batter and forcing a pop out to center to end the threat with runners on second and third.

The second inning was all the Buccaneers though, as a lead-off double was too much to erase. On the ensuing at-bat, Sarah Brown singled in Madison Koger that gave CSU a 1-0 lead. Two batters later after a sacrifice bunt the Buccaneers picked up its second run of the contest thanks to an RBI groundout by Meghan Gagliano.

Both teams would remain quiet as Marvin and Charleston Southern pitcher Arizona Pilgrim locked up in a duel. Marvin allowed just one hit in the third and fourth innings, without issuing a walk as well.

In the fifth the Highlanders found home plate thanks to a solo shot over the right field wall by Fisher, her second home run and 13th RBI of the year. Her 13 runs driven in are now tied for most on the team with freshman Destiny Freeman.

Charleston Southern threatened again in the bottom half of the fifth but Marvin was able to dance out of it this time after a lead-off single and sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position. After a walk, Marvin was able to force the line out double play at first base thanks to the defensive handiwork of Hunter Mundy, who caught the line drive and stepped on the bag for the pair of outs.

After a quick sixth inning the Highlanders went to bat in the seventh to try and steal the game late. A three up, three down inning ended the game as the Highlanders dropped their first Big South game.

STAT OF THE NIGHT
The front three batters in the Radford lineup all reached base in different innings but were unable to rally together in one inning. Medlam singled in the first, Douglas was hit by a pitch in the second, and Fisher homered in the third.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Marvin went the distance for the fifth time this season going six innings, striking out two, walking one and giving up eight hits. She only gave up two extra-base hits while forcing nine fly outs and six ground outs. After a shaky second inning, five Charleston Southern base runners were also stranded in the game. Maggie Rowe was the only batter that had a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-3 at the plate.
