RADFORD TAKES GAME ONE, DROPS GAME TWO AND SERIES TO CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Momentum of a 3-1 win in game one of the doubleheader versus Charleston Southern carried over into the first inning of game two but the Buccaneers ultimately came out on top, 9-7, and took the series on Saturday at CSU Softball Stadium.

GAME 1
Maggie Rowe came up clutch for the Highlanders in the first game when she hit a two-run single and gave Radford a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning of game one of the day. The ball got away from the CSU left fielder and Hunter Mundy was able to score from first for the third run of the game.

Talia Douglas and Sofia Tapia both led off the seventh inning with back-to-back singles through the left side. After an out, Mundy drew the one-out walk and Rowe stepped in the box and did the rest.

The game was sealed thanks to two web gems by Ellie Rowe at third base and Tapia in center field. Rowe caught a dropping line drive in between her legs for the first out and Tapia went full superman and caught a line shot tailing into left center field for out number two. Douglas made the final out of the game and the Highlanders had some momentum going into the final game of the series.

It was a slow start as the Highlanders did not get in the hit column until the fourth inning with a Tapia single. Charleston Southern picked up its third hit of the game in the bottom frame and it was also the first run of the game as Caitlyn Emberson hit a solo home run to center field.

Radford stayed within striking distance after making two huge plays at the plate in the fifth and sixth innings. Despite two benign errors, the defense backed up Kayla Huffman. The senior had one of her best performances of the season with a one-run complete game performance and four strikeouts.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Buccaneers outhit the Highlanders, 6-4, but Maggie Rowe came up with the biggest hit of the day in the seventh inning. Tapia was the only Highlander with a multi-hit game. Huffman only allowed one run with four strikeouts

GAME 2
The second game was far different from the first as the two teams combined for 24 hits – 12 each. Momentum of the first game carried over for Radford as the top three hitters reached base with hits in the first inning, including a one-run double by Hannah Medlam that put Radford on top 1-0.

Medlam later scored on an error and Hunter Mundy drove in another with an RBI single. On the same play, Destiny Freeman – who reached on the first error of the inning – scored on the second error of the inning for the fourth and final run of the first. The Freeman run gave Radford a 4-0 lead.

Charleston Southern created some momentum of its own with five runs in the bottom half of the first inning. The Buccaneers increased its lead with a run in the second and third innings as well as a pair of runs in the fourth. Altogether the runs made it a 9-4 contest.

Sarah Smith entered in the fourth inning and stopped the bleeding. She pitched the final 2.1 innings and only allowed three hits with one strikeout.

The Highlanders made some noise with a run in the fifth thanks to a Talia Douglas double to right center field that scored Sydney Fisher – who also reached on a double. Tapia reached base safely but one run was all the Highlanders could get after an infield pop out and a ground out ended the threat.

Radford cut the lead to two, 9-7, thanks to an RBI single by Medlam and sacrifice fly by Douglas in the sixth inning. However, Radford left the tying run on second base as Tapia was unable to get her third hit of the game.

STAT OF THE GAME
The top three hitters (Fisher, Medlam and Douglas) had six of the team's 12 hits with three doubles – one each – three runs scored and four RBIs.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Along with the top three hitters, Maggie Rowe had a pair of hits. Medlam and Douglas picked up two RBIs each, while Fisher scored two runs and drew two walks. CSU's top three hitters had two hits each with six runs scored.
