SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH NORFOLK STATE IN MIDWEEK TILT

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team split with Norfolk State in a midweek tilt on Wednesday afternoon at Radford Softball Stadium. The Highlanders dropped the first game, 1-0, but bounced back and won the second one, 8-3.

GAME 1
Despite outhitting the Spartans (12-10), the Highlanders still never got a run to cross the plate.

Each team recorded a hit in the second inning and the Highlanders picked up two in the third inning as Ellie Rowe and Sydney Fisher recorded singles. The two players advanced to third with one out, but a double play ended the threat.

On the ensuing inning, Radford made two errors and a Hunter Halford single plated the first run of the game. The Spartan run gave them a 1-0 advantage.

Radford had at least one runner on base in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings but couldn't get a run on the board.

Kayla Huffman pitched well in the circle. The senior only allowed four hits and one unearned run. She only walked one and struck out two.

STAT OF THE GAME
As soon as the Highlanders got something cooking offensively, the Norfolk State defense stepped up and made plays. The Spartan defense turned three double plays in the contest.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Talia Douglas, Sofia Tapia, Sienna Williams and Hunter Mundy were the other Highlanders to pick up hits. Each team left six runners on base. Halford picked up the win altogether as she had the lone RBI and picked up the win in the circle. She pitched a complete game shutout en route to her sixth win of the season.

GAME 2
It seemed as though the struggles from game one would continue in game two as Norfolk State (12-11) struck first with a solo home run in the first inning. The Highlanders answered right back as Sofia Tapia drove in Fisher, who reached with a lead off walk, with her fourth double of the season.

With the game tied at one, NSU took the lead once more scoring its second run of the game on a Highlander misplay and took a 2-1 lead. It seemed as though this one would go in favor of Norfolk Sate as well, but two solo home runs from Destiny Freeman and Hunter Mundy gave Radford a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning. The duo each hit their team-leading fourth home runs of the season.

Then the Highlander bats came alive in the fifth inning with four runs on four hits. The first two came from Fisher and Hannah Medlam. After Douglas reached on a fielder's choice, Sofia Tapia drove in one with a single to center field. The hit drove in Fisher and gave Radford an insurance run, 4-2.

Maggie Rowe and Destiny Freeman took advantage of having a runner at third with no outs and one out, respectively. They each hit sacrifice flies in the inning and increased the lead to 6-2, before Ellie Rowe hit her second double as a Highlander that drove in Tapia. The RBI double from the redshirt-freshman gave Radford a 7-2 lead.

Norfolk State cut into the lead with a leadoff home run by Tuli Iosefa in the sixth inning. Jessie Marvin had payback on the brain.

After the Spartans changed the pitcher in the circle for the second time Marvin stepped into the batter's box in the sixth inning. Marvin had two at-bats before and made good contact, but both resulted in outs. The third at-bat saw a full count before Marvin got ahold of it. She hit a high fly ball to left field that found its way over the fence for her first collegiate hit and home run. It gave Radford its third long ball of the game and an 8-3 lead.

STAT OF THE GAME
With a 2-for-3 performance, Fisher, has now hit safely in 23 of 25 games played this season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Along with Fisher, Sofia Tapia and Ellie Rowe picked up a pair of hits. It was Rowe's first multi-hit game of her career and she came out with three total hits in the doubleheader. It was Tapia's 25th career multi-hit game (21st with two hits). Tapia also drove in a pair of runs for the second time this season and the sixth time of her career. Marvin's first career hit and home run came on her fourth win of the season.
