OFFENSE COMES TO LIFE IN RADFORD’S 10-2 SERIES OPENING WIN OVER GARDNER-WEBB



BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – All three phases of the game came together on Friday night as the Radford softball team defeated Gardner-Webb, 10-2, in the series opener at Brinkley Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C.
 
The Highlanders piled on 11 hits offensively, committed no errors on the defensive side and Kayla Huffman struck out seven batters against the Runnin' Bulldogs. Destiny Freeman started the offensive fireworks in the second inning with a leadoff solo home run to left center field.
 
Freeman picked up her second RBI of the night in the third inning with a single to left field that plated Talia Douglas for a 2-0 lead. A couple of batters later, Hunter Mundy drew a bases loaded walk and increased the Highlander lead to 3-0.
 
Meanwhile, Huffman was cruising with three strikeouts and a no-hitter through three innings.
 
Sydney Fisher added to the 3-0 lead in the fourth inning as she scored on an error. Then Maggie Rowe gave Radford its sixth hit of the game and her team-leading seventh double of the season that drove in Freeman and Sofia Tapia, who each reached on a walk. The three run fourth inning gave Radford a 6-0 lead.
 
Andria Booth broke the no-hitter with a single in the fourth inning. She later came around to score on a Brooke Perry double to left field. Autumn Owen drove in another Runnin' Bulldog run with a sacrifice fly in the same inning. That cut into the deficit and made it 6-2.
 
The Highlanders added one more in the fifth and three more in the seventh to create an insurmountable lead for Gardner-Webb.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
The Highlanders scored in five out of the seven innings and tallied 11 hits, which is the most against a Big South opponent this season. The team also hit a season-high five doubles – all from different players.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Hannah Medlam led the way with a 3-for-4 performance and one run scored with a double. Fisher, Maggie Rowe and Freeman each had a pair of hits, while Rowe and Freeman had two RBIs. Fisher and Rowe each had doubles and Freeman had the lone home run of the game. Tapia drove in a game-high three RBIs and scored two runs. Huffman pitched her eighth complete game of the season with seven strikeouts and only four hits allowed.

"It was a good team win tonight," Creasy said. "We really saw some things come together that we have been working on the last couple of weeks. We're excited to get to game two and finish the series strong tomorrow."
 
UP NEXT
Radford will go for the series win and sweep on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
