RADFORD SPLITS WITH GARDNER-WEBB, WINS FINALE AND SERIES

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Both games came down to the wire on Saturday at Brinkley Stadium as the Highlanders dropped the first game, 3-2, but bounced back and won the series finale, 2-1, that clinched the series over Gardner-Webb.

GAME 1
It all came down to the seventh inning in game one. The inning got started with an infield error, but the runner was erased on a fielder's choice. A single by Jenna Wacaster and a walk by Autumn Owen loaded the bases with no outs. The Highlanders' 2-0 lead was in danger.

A questionable call on the ensuing at-bat cut the deficit to one run. A ball grazed the arm of Weslyn Almond, who was hovering over the plate and seemed to not make an effort to get out of the way. The home plate umpire told her to take her base and a run crossed the plate.

Jessie Marvin got an infield pop out for the second out of the inning. The next batter, Andria Booth, put a ball in no-man's land in the infield. Sienna Williams fielded the ball cleanly as a run crossed the plate but made an errant throw towards first base. The error allowed the go-ahead run to score and gave Gardner-Webb a 3-2 walk-off victory.

Marvin was cruising through three innings and had a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from Hannah Medlam in the third inning. It was Medlam's second hit of the day and it scored Marvin, who reached on a fielder's choice.

The Highlanders ran into some trouble in the fourth inning but got out of a bases loaded jam as Marvin was able to get Wacaster to foul out to Williams at third base.

Radford had the bases full with one out but was only able to get one run across as Destiny Freeman came through in the clutch with a two-out RBI single through the left side and gave Radford a 2-0 lead. The Highlanders were looking for more, but a strikeout ended the threat as the Highlander left the bases full.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford left 10 runners on base, including three in the fifth inning and two in the third, fourth and seventh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Marvin pitched a great game going 6.2 innings with only four hits allowed. The three runs that scored were all unearned. Sydney Fisher went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Five other players had a hit each, including Medlam and Freeman that had the RBIs. Williams had a season-high six assists in the contest.

GAME 2
Game two of the day – the series finale – also came down to the final inning, only this time it went in favor of the Highlanders.

Huffman pitched a great game but seemed to be running out of steam in the final inning. She allowed two of her five hits in the seventh inning. Back-to-back singles kicked things off for Gardner-Webb. Annamarie Warley hit a ball deep into center field that was almost the third hit in a row and most detrimental of the inning, but Sofia Tapia made the catch straddling the warning track for the first out of the inning.

Radford wasn't out of harm's way yet as a run scored on a foul out to Medlam in left field. That run cut the deficit to one, 2-1. With the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at the plate, Brooke Perry popped up the first pitch she saw in the middle of the infield. Sienna Williams made the running catch and sealed the 2-1 victory for the Highlanders.

With a hit in two out of the first three innings, the Highlanders finally got on the board with Sofia Tapia's first triple of the season. The three-bagger scored Destiny Freeman from first and gave Radford a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

The middle innings were some of Huffman's best work as she only allowed one hit through the third, fourth and fifth innings. However, the defense helped out Huffman in the third as Perry grounded into an inning-ending double play after Kaylee Wacaster drew a one-out walk.

Later in the game, Talia Douglas picked up her second hit of the series finale and it proved to be a big one. She took a 2-0 pitch to center field for a solo home run and gave Radford an important insurance run with a 2-0 lead.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Douglas and Tapia each had multi-hit performances. Douglas went 2-for-4, while Tapia went 2-for-3. The two of them had the only extra base hits for Radford. Huffman pitched her ninth complete game with one run allowed on five hits and two strikeouts.

TWEET OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"Today was a good day but could've easily been a great day," Creasy said. "We had one game get away from us, but it was great to get a series win nonetheless. I thought our pitchers did everything right, but we still need consistency from our offense and defense. Now, we turn our attention to a couple of ACC foes before another big conference series next weekend."

UP NEXT
Radford faces a pair of ACC teams in midweek tilts as Virginia will come to Radford Softball Stadium on Tuesday at 6 p.m., and the Highlanders travel down the road to face Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Wednesday.
