TRIO OF HOME RUNS CARRY RADFORD PAST VIRGINIA, 6-4

RADFORD, Va. – Three home runs hit by three different players carried Radford past ACC foe, Virginia, 6-4 on Tuesday night at the Radford Softball Stadium.

Destiny Freeman helped the Highlanders hang a crooked letter on the scoreboard early with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The home run drove in Hannah Medlam and Sydney Fisher, who reached with back-to-back inning opening walks.

Lindsay Hunter was the second player to get in on the home run action as she blasted a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence in the bottom of the second inning. It was the freshman's first career home run and RBI and it increased the Highlander lead to 4-0.

Allyson Frei, the Virginia (16-14) starting pitcher walked her fourth batter of the game in the third inning. The walk loaded the bases with one out and the Cavaliers called for a pitching change. Clare Zureich entered with the bases loaded and one out. She picked up a strikeout for out number two but threw a wild pitch that advanced the runners a base each. Freeman scored from third and extended the Radford lead, 5-0.

The game seemed to be all Highlanders at this point, until the fourth inning when a pair of runs scored on a pair of Highlander errors. An inning later Hayley Busby made it a 5-3 game as she hit a solo home run to left field.

Things became interesting in the sixth inning when Arizona Ritchie and Tori Gilbert connected on back-to-back doubles. Ritchie scored on the Gilbert double and cut the deficit to one run, 5-4. Gilbert moved over to third on an infield groundout and Jessie Marvin was able to get a fly ball out to Medlam in left field to end the inning with the tying run stranded at third base.

It only took one pitch after that for Hunter Mundy to give Radford an insurance run. She parked the first pitch she saw into the trees in left field. That gave Radford a 6-4 lead in the sixth inning, but Zureich bounced back and struck out the side.

Marvin stepped into the circle to go for another complete game, but the reinforcements were called on after she gave up a leadoff walk. That reinforcement was Kayla Huffman. The reigning Big South Pitcher of the Week shut down the Cavaliers in just nine pitches and picked up her eighth career save.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford tied a season-high with three home runs hit in Tuesday's game. It's the second time in the last five games the Highlanders have tied the season-high with a trio of home runs.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Freeman and Sofia Tapia had four of Radford's six hits. Freeman drove in three runs with a double and home run in a 2-for-2 performance and added a pair of runs scored. Radford drew five walks in the contest and three of them came from the top third of the lineup. Hunter hit the first long ball of her collegiate career in a 1-for-3 performance.

TWEET OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"It felt great to pick up a home win over an ACC team," Creasy said. "We put together some great at-bats and were backed up by great pitching. There were some defensive miscues that we will still need to work on, but we had great production from Destiny. She has been seeing the ball well, so we moved her up in the lineup and she was productive. Hopefully we can keep this momentum heading into tomorrow night and this weekend."

UP NEXT
Radford will travel down the road to Virginia Tech on Wednesday at 6 p.m., before returning home for a doubleheader against Presbyterian on Saturday.
